Designated Driver? Where To Get Non-Alcoholic Drinks In Chicago

Chicago Magazine:

According to a 2011 Gallup poll, 35 percent of American adults say they don't drink alcohol, yet most Chicago bars and restaurants that pride themselves on creative cocktails don't list nonalcoholic options on their menus. The Violet Hour, The Aviary, The Whistler, Sable, and Curio are all very nice about offering to make something imaginative without liquor--once you ask.

Ron Paul garners applause in Iowa, but does it come from caucusgoers? (The Ticket)

Paul speaks during a town hall in Newton, IA Dec. 28 (Charlie Riedel/AP)

NEWTON, Iowa--Ron Paul narrowly leads the RealClearPolitics average of the most recent polls of Republican voters in Iowa, with Mitt Romney close behind. And he has?attracted a loyal and active following that has helped him win straw polls across the country (and?a close second place in the Aug. 13, 2011, Iowa straw poll) as well as raise formidable amounts of money.

But it remains unclear if his supporters will come out in force for the caucuses on Tuesday.

"I think so--if I get information, yeah, I'll be there," Lorraine DeNardis, a Paul supporter, told Yahoo News when asked after a town-hall meeting with the candidate?if she plans participate in the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Addressing a crowd of around 150 attendees Wednesday at the town hall, Paul spoke exactly as he always has: hammering home his disdain for big government, his commitment to lower spending and his respect for the Constitution.

Though he did note that some things appear to be a little bit different these days.

"This looks like there are more cameras than there used to be," Paul said, noting the dozen TV cameramen on a riser at the back of the meeting room--in addition to the reporters and print photographers positioned around his podium. "I've been talking about freedom for a long time-- that's what motivated me to get into politics-- and for many years the crowds were very small, little interest. And it's steadily grown."

Paul received loud applause from the crowd for the cornerstones of his presidential platform, including eliminating the Department of Education and cutting $1 trillion from the federal budget in his first year in office.

"People say, That means everybody has to suffer,"?Paul said of the reaction to his spending-slashing plans. "Well, not necessarily. The people who got bailed out, they might have to suffer, but they should suffer. They should go bankrupt, not us."

"Before I thought he was just too radical but I rethought it and it makes sense,"? David Rethmeier of Rock Creek, Iowa, told Yahoo News, adding that he first became a Paul supporter this cycle and considers himself an independent.

"I think he has awakened a lot of people like me who were never really interested in politics," Jeff Neelson of Iowa City, Iowa, told Yahoo News.

As part of its effort to get out the vote next week, Paul's campaign announced on Tuesday that it plans to host 52 caucus training sessions around the state leading up to the caucuses

Lorraine DeNardis, who lives in Bondurant, Iowa, said that the Paul campaign's email on Tuesday helped her to identify a local meeting in Clive that she may attend.

Paul did not respond to any inquiries from reporters as he entered and exited Wednesday's town hall meeting. He has been fending off a new spate of news stories about newsletters written under his name in the 1980s and 1990s that contained racist language. ?Paul says he did not write the newsletters and that he rejects the controversial comments.

Scrutinize your presence on Facebook

Here's one way to sum up 2011: I added 71 people as Facebook friends, shared 26 links and commented on 98 of my friends' status updates. I was tagged in 33 photos and added 18 of my own to the site.

I also attempted to keep up with Facebook's endless redesigns, most recently with the introduction of Timeline. With it, your Facebook profile offers highlights from your past, not just your recent happenings. Last week, I urged all of you to carefully curate your Timelines to avoid coming across as vain or revealing forgotten skeletons.

This week, I will go through other ways to manage your life on Facebook.

It's good to take stock of your Facebook presence from time to time, given how quickly the site changes its features and settings and how easily many of us add people to our lists of friends. Even if you haven't switched to Timeline yet, you can still follow these steps to review what you're really revealing about yourself.

Who are your friends?
In the early days, I was very judicious about whom I accepted as Facebook friends. People I hadn't met in person, relatives I hadn't spoken to in years and friends who simply annoyed me didn't make the cut. Now, my friends list includes people I haven't been in touch with since college and others I met only once at a party, wedding or trip.

Do all of them need to know ? or even care ? that I started watching "How I Met Your Mother" or ate an undercooked hot dog at 3 a.m.? Should they see photos of me at a recent holiday bash?

Maybe not.

Now is a good time to go through your friends list to see who ought to disappear. A friend's significant other long after they broke up? An acquaintance who has 1,000 friends and never interacts with you on Facebook? People who tighten their privacy settings so much that you see no more than any stranger would?

Gone, goodbye, nice to know you. Facebook won't alert the friends you drop.

All friends not created equal
You may want to share an ultrasound of your fetus only with family members, or share party photos with close friends. Other rants and milestones may be appropriate for everyone.

Facebook has new tools to make it easier to create subgroups such as family and co-workers. Start by going to "lists" on the left side of your Facebook home page (you may have to click on "more" to see it).

Facebook had automatically added 103 of my friends to a "New York Area" list and suggested dozens of others who hadn't told Facebook their location. The suggestions were surprisingly accurate; the inaccurate ones were for those who used to live in New York but have moved on. I added 31 so that I can broadcast New York happenings only to them and spare my Californian and European friends.

Next came "Close Friends." Again, the tool was pretty good at suggesting people with whom I have interacted the most, online and offline. One factor is whether you've appeared in photos together. Facebook won't reveal who made your list of close friends, so don't worry about keeping people off.

I went through a similar exercise for "Family," choosing to include only the closer ones I'd share more with. In this case, those you're adding will be told, so if you don't want that known, create a new list rather use the one Facebook already set up.

To do that, click "lists," then "Create List." I added one for cousins, two for college, one for work, one for my running group and one for those I still see from my days in Washington.

Some people are in multiple groups, others in none. These lists make it easier to share posts with only a subset of my Facebook friends. I can also use the lists to see only posts from specific groups.

Facebook also has a "Restricted" list where you can dump those you don't want to share much with. Facebook promises not to reveal who gets added.

What are you sharing?
Update your biographical information. The current city is important because it's what Facebook uses to create the list of nearby friends. Now is also the time to say if your work has changed or if you no longer want your birthday revealed.

Look for the globe icon if you want to share certain details only with certain people, such as friends of friends or those on one of your lists.

You should also go through your lists of favorite books, music and TV shows. Replace Milli Vanilli with Justin Bieber if you want to seem youthful and hip.

While you're at it, pare down the companies and products you've decided to "like" over the years. Be careful about what you're endorsing. Facebook may use your name and profile photo next to ads that your friends see. So if you've liked Target's page, for example, your friends could see your photo next to an ad from Target.

Controlling what you share
Look for the arrow at the upper left corner and select "Account Settings."

Begin with "General" on the left and check to make sure everything's up to date. Click "Edit" if you need to change anything such as your email address.

Then go one by one down the list on your left. If you're not sure what something is, click "Edit" for details. Under "Apps," get rid of apps you no longer use so that they will no longer have access to your data. Under "Notifications," choose what types of activities Facebook sends you alerts on.

After that, go back to that arrow and select "Privacy Settings."

Under "How You Connect," you can make it more difficult for people to reach you by restricting their ability to send you messages or make friend requests. You can also prevent people from posting on your profile. You can tweak "How Tags Work" and insist on reviewing photos or posts others tag you in before they appear on your profile. In most cases, you can find out more about what's happening by clicking on the item.

Finally, think about whether you want your list of friends visible to strangers on Facebook. If you have switched to Timeline, click on "See All" within your box of friends, then click "Edit" to narrow who sees it. For traditional profiles, hover over the friends box and click on the pencil that emerges. Then click on the globe next to your friends.

Checking it twice
Test how others see your profile by going to "View As..." at the top of the profile. Those with Timeline should first click the wheel next to "Activity Log." Enter the name of a close friend, a co-worker or a random acquaintance to make sure no one is seeing too much. Click "public" to see how everyone else sees the profile.

Facebook changes so often, so don't be surprised that by the time you figure it all out, the service unveils another redesign that may affect what you've already done. There used to be a way to prevent everyone from sending you friend requests, for instance. I'm now limited to blocking specific individuals.

It's good to go through this exercise on a regular basis ? annually, quarterly or more often if you can. Be mindful that Facebook pushes for more openness, so the restrictions available today might be gone tomorrow.

Troops made a grisly Christmas discovery in northeastern Mexico when they found 13 bodies in a truck, in the latest violence between warring drug cartels.

Soldiers found two messages at the scene in Tamaulipas state "alluding to the rivalry between criminal groups" in the northeast, the Department of Justice said in a statement early Monday.

Investigators say the murders are linked to Friday's discovery of 10 bodies in the town of Tampico Alto, in neighbouring Veracruz state, and attacks by gunmen last week on three buses that left 16 people dead.

Two months ago, the government of President Felipe Calderon sent police and army reinforcements into Veracruz after an escalation in killings attributed to the bloody feud between the Zetas, one of Mexico's most violent cartels, and the Sinaloa cartel, which operates in the area.

The move was part of Calderon's national crackdown on drug cartels launched in December 2006. More than 45,000 people have been killed since then in drug-related violence.

Frey says upcoming retirees "may not run with the herd," but many will still move to Florida

Published: Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9:37 p.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9:37 p.m.

"We're extremely lucky," Carole Chorba said. "We put away for a rainy day and here we are."

But are the Chorbas a sign that the recession's chilling effect on retirement has eased this year in Southwest Florida, and the long-awaited migration of baby boomers has begun? Or are they an exception to a major trend that will see more Americans aging in their home communities ? either by preference or because of health or economic constraints?

The answer to both questions is yes, say the people who track U.S. census data.

In 2010, more Americans were 65 and older than ever before, making up 13 percent of the total population. The 65-and-over group is now the largest in both size and percentage of the U.S. population, compared with any previous census, the federal government reported last month.

Florida still leads the nation in concentration of residents 65 and older, but that share of the population has gently dropped in the last two decades, from 18.5 percent in 1990, to 17.6 percent in 2000 and 17.3 percent in 2010.

And during that last 10-year period, the rest of the country has begun to look grayer, especially in the West and Great Plains. In 2010, Sumter County ? home of the Villages retirement community ? was the only Florida county to rank in the top five for growth in the 65-and-older population. Three of the others were in Colorado and one was in Alaska.

Three Florida counties ? Sumter, Charlotte and Highlands ? did make the top five for their share of residents 65 and older. But Sarasota County ranked ninth, falling from fifth in 2000, said Carrie Werner, a statistician in the Census Bureau's Age and Special Populations Branch.

Much of the slippage in Florida's share of older residents can be linked to the economic downturn and housing crisis. Census Bureau projections had predicted a 17.8 percent share for Florida in 2010, anticipating a wave of early retirees that did not materialize.

The projection for 2030 is 27.1 percent, with the number of 65-and-older state residents more than doubling in 20 years.

The last decade saw people 65 and over become the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, largely thanks to the leading edge of the baby boom and greater longevity among men. And even though a smaller share of them is expected to retire in Southwest Florida ? or even to retire at all ? the baby boom generation is so huge that those who do come will change the landscape here, said William Frey, a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution and professor of population studies at the University of Michigan.

"Florida will continue to be a magnet for retirees. Even if they're spreading out to other places, there's still going to be a significant number," Frey said. Baby boomers, in contrast to their parents, "may not run with the herd as much," Frey acknowledged. "But it's such a big herd."

Denial to acceptance

The recession's effect on stock portfolios and housing prices forced many would-be Florida retirees to delay moving, said Pat Neal, president of the Lakewood Ranch development company, Neal Communities. The average age of his customers, he said, has gone from 59 to 63.

"People postponed everything," Neal said. "It's now six years later and the biological clock has continued to tick. You know how it goes: denial, acceptance, resignation. People are resigned to the fact that their home in Cincinnati will never have the value it did in 2005."

Carole Chorba, 66, said a "really bad winter" in Michigan convinced her husband, 64, to leave his longtime job with the Ford Motor Co. They had family in Sarasota and found a home in the Oaks Golf and Country Club.

"He just came home and said, 'I can't take any more cold days,'" she said. She figured it might take a year or even two to sell their house, but it was gone in a week.

"My husband watches HGTV all the time," she said. "We hired a stager, and did a lot of little things to make it attractive."

Sarasota Realtor Candy Swick, who sold the Chorbas their house, is among those who believe that in 2011, the tap turned back on for Sarasota's retirement housing market. Her firm's business doubled this year, she said, and 80 percent of her own 165 sales this year were to retirees. "Some of them are still looking at the sale of their property up north," she said. "But what I see is more advance planning. Which is really interesting, because it means the younger people are planning on retiring here."

If Swick is right, Southwest Florida will see more people like Kari Lindsey, 51, who oversees 70 surgery centers for a health care company in Nashville. She and her husband bought a condo on Lido Key in March, and she has visited 10 times since then.

"We probably won't retire for nine or 10 more years," Lindsey said. "But I reached a place in my career where I could afford to start planning for retirement. We looked for maybe three years, but always kept going back to Sarasota. When I want something, I figure out a way to make it happen."

What boomers want

More Florida retirees in the next two decades will look like Lindsey ? healthy, financially comfortable and in a position to control their fates ? said Larry Polivka, director of the Claude Pepper Center on aging at Florida State University. High medical bills or lack of pensions and savings, he said, will keep others at home.

"Because of the growing threats to retirement security in America, you will see fewer people in the boomer generation making what we call 'amenity moves,'" he said. "To some extent that's been happening all along, for decades; the relative retirement asset wealth in Florida is higher than in the nation. But this will be more the case in the future."

Polivka said a higher net worth among incoming retirees will lessen the state's burden of providing long-term medical care and other services. "But it may be more than compensated for by the increase in lower-income Floridians who age in place here," he said.

He added that even a slight dip in the growth rate for older Floridians should be a cause for concern.

"I think that Florida has historically benefited enormously from its retiree population," Polivka said. "Other states have been siphoning them off for the last 10 to 20 years, and that has cost us."

Florida can best defend its market share in retirement housing by paying attention to boomers' desires for conveniences and support systems that their parents lack, said John Migliaccio, director of research at the Metlife Mature Market Institute. Among these are help with transportation, home maintenance and personal care.

"The lessons that boomers are learning from taking care of their parents are going to be incorporated in their own plans as they get older," he predicted. "For Florida builders, this means they really have to start going beyond the granite countertops, and start thinking about communities."

What are emotion expressions for?

Friday, December 23, 2011

That cartoon scary face ? wide eyes, ready to run ? may have helped our primate ancestors survive in a dangerous wild, according to the authors of an article published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. The authors present a way that fear and other facial expressions might have evolved and then come to signal a person's feelings to the people around him.

The basic idea, according to Azim F. Shariff of the University of Oregon, is that the specific facial expressions associated with each particular emotion evolved for some reason. Shariff cowrote the paper with Jessica L. Tracy of the University of British Columbia. So fear helps respond to threat, and the squinched-up nose and mouth of disgust make it harder for you to inhale anything poisonous drifting on the breeze. The outthrust chest of pride increases both testosterone production and lung capacity so you're ready to take on anyone. Then, as social living became more important to the evolutionary success of certain species?most notably humans?the expressions evolved to serve a social role as well; so a happy face, for example, communicates a lack of threat and an ashamed face communicates your desire to appease.

The research is based in part on work from the last several decades showing that some emotional expressions are universal?even in remote areas with no exposure to Western media, people know what a scared face and a sad face look like, Shariff says. This type of evidence makes it unlikely that expressions were social constructs, invented in Western Europe, which then spread to the rest of the world.

And it's not just across cultures, but across species. "We seem to share a number of similar expressions, including pride, with chimpanzees and other apes," Shariff says. This suggests that the expressions appeared first in a common ancestor.

The theory that emotional facial expressions evolved as a physiological part of the response to a particular situation has been somewhat controversial in psychology; another article in the same issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science argues that the evidence on how emotions evolved is not conclusive.

Shariff and Tracy agree that more research is needed to support some of their claims, but that, "A lot of what we're proposing here would not be all that controversial to other biologists," Shariff says. "The specific concepts of 'exaptation' and 'ritualization' that we discuss are quite common when discussing the evolution of non-human animals." For example, some male birds bring a tiny morsel of food to a female bird as part of an elaborate courtship display. In that case, something that might once have been biologically relevant?sharing food with another bird?has evolved over time into a signal of his excellence as a potential mate. In the same way, Shariff says, facial expressions that started as part of the body's response to a situation may have evolved into a social signal.

FCC approves first white space device and database for Wilmington, NC

FCC Whitespaces
The FCC has approved the first device to use the much buzzed about "white spaces" between television broadcast frequencies to transmit data. The recipient of the honor is a receiver from Koos Technical Services that's designed to be a last-mile connection for surveillance cameras and telemetry systems. The radio will tap into database run by Spectrum Bridge to ensure it doesn't interfere with other broadcasts. Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement that, "we are taking an important step towards enabling a new wave of wireless innovation. Unleashing white spaces spectrum has the potential to exceed even the many billions of dollars in economic benefit from Wi-Fi, the last significant release of unlicensed spectrum, and drive private investment and job creation." For now, only the city of Wilmington, NC will be able to benefit from the approval, as the FCC continues to iron out the details that will prevent these devices from interfering with wireless microphones. Check out the press release after the break for more info.

Mitt Romney Wants to Deport President Obama's Uncle Omar

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he would deport President Barack Obama's uncle, who authorities say was arrested in August for DUI near Boston.

Onyango "Omar" Obama is, allegedly, an illegal immigrant.

In an interview with Boston radio host Howie Carr, Romney said "yes" when asked if "Uncle Omar" should be deported. Romney at first did not recognize the name, and was far from incendiary about it, saying simply that U.S. immigration laws should be enforced.

Take a listen to the exchange:

Onyango Obama is the 67-year-old half-brother of the commander-in-chief's late father, Barack Obama, Sr. His case is pending in Framingham, Mass., District Court.

He was initially held without bail by immigration officials on allegations he violated an official order to return Kenya issued 20 years ago but has since been released.

Award-winning Japanese director Morita dead at 61 (AP)

TOKYO ? Director Yoshimitsu Morita, whose films depicted the absurdity and vulnerability of everyday life in conformist Japan, has died. He was 61.

Morita, who won international acclaim over his prolific 30-year career, died Tuesday of acute liver failure at a Tokyo hospital, said Yoko Ota, spokeswoman at Toei Co., the film company behind his latest work.

Morita's movies were distinctly Japanese, depicting the fragile beauty of the nation's human psyche and visual landscape while daringly poking fun at its ridiculous tendency for rigid bureaucracy and ritualistic hierarchy.

Morita made a splash among global film buffs with 1983's "Family Game," starring Yusaku Matsuda of "Black Rain" as an offbeat tutor who forms a heartwarming relationship with a young man in a stereotypical middle-class family.

Its striking cinematography, focusing on rows and rows of identical apartments and people dining solemnly sitting side by side, was an exhilarating parody of Japanese family values.

His works were shown at many international film festivals, including Berlin and Montreal.

They included "Tsubaki Sanjuro," a 2007 remake of the 1962 classic by Akira Kurosawa, as well as works based on novels such as Soseki Natsume's poetic "Sorekara" and Junichi Watanabe's "Shitsurakuen."

"Bokutachi Kyuko A Ressha de Iko," a comedy about train lovers starring Kenichi Matsuyama of Tran Anh Hung's "Norwegian Wood," will be released posthumously next year, Toei said Wednesday.

Funeral arrangements were still undecided. Morita is survived by his wife Misao.
