Vatican digs in after gay marriage advances

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican is digging in after gay marriage initiatives scored big wins this week in the U.S. and Europe, vowing to never stop insisting that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

In a front-page article in Saturday's Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope's spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don't now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.

Catholic teaching holds that homosexuals should be respected and treated with dignity but that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered." The Vatican also opposes same-sex marriage, insisting on the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society.

The Vatican's anti-gay marriage media blitz came after three U.S. states approved same-sex marriage by popular vote in the election that returned Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency, Spain upheld its gay marriage law, and France pushed ahead with legislation that could see gay marriage legalized early next year.

"One might say the church, at least on this front, has been defeated," L'Osservatore Romano wrote. "But that's not the case."

The article insisted that Catholics were putting up a valiant fight to uphold church teaching in the face of "politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world" that are backed by institutions like the United Nations, which last year passed a non-binding resolution condemning anti-gay discrimination.

"The church is called to present itself as the lone critic of modernity, the only check ... to the breakup of the anthropological structures on which human society was founded," it said.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, for his part, said gays can have their rights protected by means other than through legal marital recognition. He stressed that children should have a right to say they have a father and a mother.

"If not, then why not contemplate freely chosen polygamy, and naturally so as to not discriminate, polyandry?" he asked sarcastically. Polyandry is when a woman has two or more husbands.

"As a result, don't expect the church to stop insisting that society recognizes a specific place for marriage between a man and woman," he said.

The U.S. election had been closely watched at the Vatican because of the strong divisions that erupted during the campaign between the Obama administration and U.S. bishops over gay marriage, which Obama endorsed in May. The administration and bishops clashed more vehemently over Obama's health care mandate requiring nearly all U.S. health insurance plans to cover contraception, which the church opposes.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said the contraception mandate ? which exempts houses of worship but applies to faith-affiliated employers ? is a violation of religious freedom.

The Vatican's reaction to Obama's re-election was tinged with such lingering criticism, with Pope Benedict XVI congratulating Obama and praying that the ideals of freedom and justice continue to be upheld.

Lombardi went further urging the administration to respect essential values in "promoting a culture of life and religious freedom" ? Vatican buzzwords referring to abortion, contraception and the insurance mandate.

It was a far cry from the Vatican's enthusiastic response to Obama's election in 2008. Then, the pope termed Obama's election an "historic occasion" in a personal note of congratulations sent right after he won, a break with traditional Vatican protocol that usually sees official telegrams of congratulations sent on inauguration day.

Frustrated residents protest outside New York utility

NEW YORK (AP) -- Even as the lights came for many who lost power in New York and New Jersey during the superstorm and a later nor'easter, hundreds of residents protested Saturday outside a Long Island utility, frustrated by its slow response to outages.

Power restoration has been slower there than in other areas hit by Superstorm Sandy, sparking criticism of the Long Island Power Authority. Some of the 130,000 blacked out homes and businesses the utility serves may not have power restored until the end of Tuesday, LIPA said.

In the rest of the region hardest hit by the storm, most service was expected to be restored by the end of the weekend, though that doesn't include tens of thousands of homes too damaged to juice up.

"We are sitting in a cold house. No one comes by," said John Mangin of Levittown, N.Y. "There should be criminal charges against the CEO and the executive board of LIPA for failure to do their jobs."

He was among about 300 people staging a rally in front of LIPA's office in Hicksville, N.Y. Not all were without power, but some who have power said they were there to protest LIPA's lack of communication.

LIPA chief operating officer Michael Hervey said they were aware customers haven't gotten the information they've needed from the utility, partly because of an outdated information technology system they're in the process of updating.

"I certainly feel the frustration of customers whose power remains out. Our hearts go out to them," Hervey said.

But he said workers are repairing unprecedented storm damage as fast as they can. About 6,400 linemen and 3,700 tree trimmers are at work, compared with 200 linemen on a normal day.

In Suffolk County, where about 28,000 remain without power, County Executive Steven Bellone announced he was cutting ties with LIPA and would deal directly with substation coordinators.

Hervey said he would not comment on that directly, but added that an ad hoc takeover of the system would lead to anarchy.

"The utility is the best suited to restore power and manage that," he said. "We can't have people step in and take over."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for investigation of the region's utilities, criticizing them as unprepared and badly managed. On Friday, two congressmen from Long Island called for the federal government to help LIPA restore electricity.

"It's a totally disorganized effort, and LIPA unfortunately seems to have lost control of the situation and that's why you see so many people becoming so angry," Rep. Peter King said Saturday.

In New York City and neighboring suburban Westchester County, utility Con Edison said it has restored electricity to 98 percent of homes and businesses. About 20,000 of the utility's customers remained powerless, down from a peak of more than 1 million.

In New Jersey, more than 100,000 customers were without power Saturday, most along the coast, utilities said. That was down from 2.7 million at the height of the storm. Most were expected to have power by the end of the weekend.

Florida Gov. refuses to enact 'Obamacare'

DEAR ABBY: My brother lost his wife, the love of his life, three years ago. He has three children. His oldest, a 25-year-old daughter, "Jenny," told him that "when you marry, it is for life." She has threatened that if he dates someone or sees anyone, she will be out of his life and he won't be able to see his future grandchildren. (Jenny is getting married next summer.)My brother is very upset. He wants to settle this argument before she is married. He hasn't dated anyone, but feels she shouldn't be trying to control his life. Please help, Abby. ...

Sewickley Non-Profits Partner to Make Senior Apartments Safer ...

After undergoing two knee replacements, Jean Harvey, 84, was happy to know that modifications being made in her apartment?s bathroom would help make life easier?and safer.

Harvey, who has lived in the Union Aid Society apartments in Sewickley for 15 years, wasn't the only resident excited for the new updates.

Helen Rondinelli, 81, the longest resident after 19 years, agreed the safety modifications were much appreciated.

?We needed it,? Rondinelli said, ?and it will be wonderful.??

Three Sewickley-based non-profits?Valley Care Association, the Union Aid Society and the Secoro Foundation?joined forces Thursday for a one-day home improvement blitz at the 22 apartments within the Union Aid buildings, 511 Centennial Ave. Union Aid provides affordable apartments for low-income older adults who have ties to Quaker Valley School District communities.

Thursday's?objective was to?help keep those older residents safe in their homes by making shower and toilet modifications. The home installations included 44 shower grab bars and six elevated toilets.?

Union Aid Society secured a grant for the work through the Secoro Foundation, a division of Sewickley Savings Bank.?Valley Care?s Home Safe Home program then coordinated the installation with its four independent contractors.

John Seitz, HSH program coordinator, said the grab bars that had been in the apartments weren't placed in optimal locations for safety. Likewise, the new ADA-approved commodes will make it easier for residents to get on and off.?

?It?s been a wonderful example of neighbors helping neighbors,? Seitz said, pointing out that the four contractors?three from Beaver County and one from Carnegie?were also working together.

Contractors spent the morning and part of the afternoon installing the new features. ?

Sherri Leifman, Union Aid Society executive director, appeared excited to see the work going forward. She said safety improvements couldn?t be happening at a better time, pointing out that falls are the leading cause of injury and death in older adults, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

?This project is going to help our residents so much,? she said.

Keith Henderson, Sewickley Savings Bank senior vice president and the Secoro Foundation treasurer, said need-based grants are awarded to projects that provide safer, more secure housing environments for seniors.?

?The cost to make these improvements is minor compared to the cost?both in dollars and in quality of life?of having an older adult fall in their home,? Henderson said.?

The Secoro Foundation?a division of Sewickley Savings Bank?stands for Sewickley, Coraopolis and Robinson, all locations of the bank?s offices.?

Secoro has worked with Valley Care for many years, but Henderson said it was the first time they?ve ever done a renovation through Union Aid Society.

Apartment residents were treated to lunch to celebrate the work and meet the contractors, Union Aid board members and staff from the three partnering organizations.

Residents expressed their gratitude.

?They?re very good to us here and very thoughtful,? Harvey said. ?It?s a wonderful place to live.??

mark_killy: Ideas Of Stand-Up Wrestling ? Recreation and Sports

To be an excellent wrestler, it?s essential to know the rules of stand-up wrestling. Principally, it all starts on the feet. You?ll want to know the right positions. You need to be in the most effective situation, in order that you will be able to adopt essentially the most environment friendly and effective wrestling postures. These are the positions or postures that you want in order to defeat your opponent. By knowing these postures, you will be able to anticipate your opponent?s move and put together for his attacks.

?On Your Ft?

Strictly talking, being in your feet in wrestling would require you to have your elbows in, chin tucked, knees bent and lead leg forward. You?ll want to just be sure you maintain your arms near your body. This can help defend you in opposition to having your opponent grabbing onto your arms and taking management of the fight. All the time preserve your arms close to your body. Don?t simply let them dangle on your sides or your front. It is advisable to have your opponent work for it. Wait on your opponent to extend his arms so as to seize you. Inadvertently, this may depart him open to your attack. That is while you take the opportunity to assault him.

?By no means Take Your Eyes off Your Opponent?

Rule of the thumb when it comes to wrestling: By no means Look Down! Do not have a look at the floor. Wherever the pinnacle goes, the physique follows. You also needs to keep away from trying up because this position exposes your throat. Stand-up wrestling requires quick thinking. You have to know find out how to mess along with your opponent?s head. A very good wrestler will seemingly pull his opponent?s head in several instructions just so to get a response out of his opponent. Having your head manipulated this manner messes with a wrestler?s focus and stability. This is the reason it is vital that you?ve got a powerful neck. This is the place neck workout routines help a lot.

?Saddle Your Opponent Your Weight?

Your opponent is your mule when you are inside the ring. You?ll want to let him carry your weight. Should you weight 600 lbs, then saddle him with every pound. Keep in mind that wrestling is about ?wrestling management? away from your opponent. It?s essential to be in management, so you?ll be capable to hook him. You must anticipate his moves, so that you will know find out how to respond. That?s the way you win towards your opponent.
