PFT: Why the Packers lost

Divisional Playoffs - Houston Texans v Baltimore RavensGetty Images

How will the Bills split the workload between their tailbacks next season?

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald thinks people should take reports about the Dolphins staff with a grain of salt.

Patriots G Brian Waters won the first playoff game of his career on Saturday.

Those who have played for Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano in the past have good things to say about him.

Said Ravens LB Terrell Suggs, ?I always say that there?s a right way to do things, there?s a wrong way to do things, and then there?s the Ravens? way to do things. It wasn?t really pretty, but hey, we?re not really a pretty team. We got the W, and on to the AFC championship.?

The Bengals run offense doesn?t score well on a year-end report card.

Special teams improvement would be a big help for the Browns in 2012.

Who are Steelers fans rooting for in the AFC Championship Game?

Texans coach Gary Kubiak wasn?t upset that QB T.J. Yates checked into the play that turned into Ed Reed?s interception at the goal line.

Front pages tell the story of the Colts? drop from Super Bowl team to first overall pick over the last two years.

By leading the league in rushing, Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew continued a trend of AFC South teams out of step with larger NFL trends.

A healthy Kenny Britt would make the Titans receiving corps very deep next season.

Harvey Araton of the New York Times thinks Broncos QB Tim Tebow should have been with his team in the aftermath of Saturday?s loss instead of ?tending to his personal business? elsewhere in the stadium.

The Chiefs expect to be very good on defense next season.

With the Packers losing, the Raiders might see a quick resolution to their coaching search.

Mock drafts have the Chargers looking for help on defense.

Eminem hasn?t lost faith in Cowboys QB Tony Romo.

Giants DE Osi Umenyiora didn?t play against the Packers in the regular season, but came up with a huge forced fumble this time around.

The Eagles might benefit from bringing in voices outside the organization.

Will free agent Saints receivers be on the Redskins? shopping list?

The Bears will be looking at cornerbacks this offseason.

K Jason Hanson is excited about the Lions? turnaround.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy?s gambles didn?t pay off on Sunday afternoon.

It doesn?t look like the fight over a Vikings stadium will end soon.

Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is underwhelmed with the choice of Dirk Koetter as the Falcons? new offensive coordinator.

Fan interest in the Panthers seemed to rise sharply this season.

The numbers behind the Saints? loss to the 49ers, including their decision to step up the blitzing in the fourth quarter.

If the Buccaneers want to interview Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell for their head coaching job, they will have to wait a little while longer.

Cardinals RB Ryan Williams? rehab has him on track to start training camp with the team.

Is Rams owner Stan Kroenke not saying enough about keeping the team in St. Louis?

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News thinks the Giants will be a very tough opponent for the 49ers.

Jon Kitna spent many years with the Seahawks and he?s returning to the area now that he?s retired.

Brazil's Embraer eyes NATO buyers for Super Tucano (Reuters)

SAO PAULO (Reuters) ? Brazil's Embraer expects to sell its Super Tucano light attack aircraft to more NATO nations after clinching an order from the United States that lifted the company into the upper echelons of global defense contractors, a top executive told Reuters.

"When you're selling to the most demanding client on the planet ... that's a showcase," Luiz Carlos Aguiar, the head of Embraer's Defense and Security unit, said in an interview. "It naturally opens the door to the NATO countries, which have many joint operations."

Just weeks after winning its first U.S. government contract, Aguiar said Embraer is also eyeing at least three other projects for the U.S. armed forces, undeterred by the political firestorm surrounding an American rival's legal challenge.

Buoyed by the U.S. endorsement, Embraer's defense unit could make up a quarter of its revenue by 2020, Aguiar said, up from an estimated 14 percent last year and under 5 percent in 2006.

The unit promises steady growth with Brazil's armed forces as the country bolsters protection of its vast borders and far-flung offshore oil reserves, reducing Embraer's reliance on highly cyclical revenue from civil aviation.

But as Embraer's defense ambitions grow in foreign countries, it also faces more politically charged competition.

The U.S. Air Force halted the $355 million Super Tucano order last week due to a lawsuit from losing bidder Hawker-Beechcraft (HKBCH.UL), of Kansas, stirring nationalist rhetoric from local lawmakers and Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

Aguiar dismissed the political risks, confident that a swift decision in courts will free up Embraer to deliver the Air Force's first Super Tucanos from a new Florida plant next year.

"Our team is totally ready. No one was deactivated," said Aguiar. "You just press the button and we go to work."

The order could grow to $950 million for 55 aircraft, which are designed for surveillance and counterinsurgency operations in rugged conditions like the Afghanistan border.

The U.S. contract is the first for the Super Tucano in the NATO alliance. An earlier generation of the plane, known as the Tucano, was used beginning in 1989 for pilot training in France and the United Kingdom.

RETURN TO ROOTS

Embraer's focus on defense is a return to its roots for the planemaker, which was founded in 1969 as a government-run supplier for the Brazilian Air Force. After it was privatized in 1994, the company reinvented itself as a commercial planemaker and eventually became the world's leading manufacturer of regional jets, competing with Canada's Bombardier (BBDb.TO).

In many ways, Embraer has also become the face of an emerging, more modern Brazil, long a commodities-based economy dependent on the country's vast natural resources and agricultural wealth, from iron ore and oil to sugar and coffee.

As Brazil's global ambitions grow with its economic rise, Embraer is pushing into new defense segments. The company has announced a string of acquisitions and new partnerships in the year since it established a separate defense and security unit.

Embraer is developing unmanned aircraft to patrol Brazil's borders deep in the Amazon. The Brazilian navy has turned to the company for planes to protect deep-sea oil reserves located more than an hour off its coastline by helicopter. And in November Embraer joined forces with state telecom Telebras to launch a defense and communications satellite.

The pace of new ventures will slow in 2012, as the focus turns to the execution of existing projects, Aguiar said.

Embraer has also finished lining up an array of suppliers for its KC-390 military cargo plane, he said, preparing the company to define specifications, determine pricing and begin sales by the first quarter of next year.

And with Embraer's scope extending well beyond the aviation market, there is more room for innovative announcements.

As Brazil prepares to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, for example, Embraer is developing software to manage public security at those major events to coordinate communication between local, state and federal forces.

"Their systems still aren't talking to each other. They're fundamentally fragmented. So there's a role for Embraer to play there, integrating all of them," Aguiar said.

Colbert preps prez run, transfers PAC to Stewart (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stephen Colbert isn't running for president ? at least not yet.

During Thursday night's episode of "The Colbert Report," Colbert legally transferred his super political action committee to his friend and Comedy Central cohort Jon Stewart. Dropping by from "The Daily Show," Stewart happily signed the documents and accepted the post, which was ceremonially observed by the two holding hands and bodily transferring the PAC powers.

The move potentially paves the way for Colbert to enter the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina, his home state. Campaigning politicians are prohibited from simultaneously running super PACs.

But Colbert only hinted at such a decision, which he had grandly hyped ahead of Thursday's show. In flirting candidate style, he announced that he is forming "an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina."

Patriotically colored balloons were released in the studio while a graphic screamed "I'm Doing It!"

Stewart and Colbert hashed out the peculiar legalities of their arrangement. With Colbert's lawyer (and former chairman of the Federal Election Commission) Trevor Potter on hand, they spelled out that while Colbert was legally forbidden from participating in strategy and advertising with the super PAC, he could still talk about his plans on his TV show and even volunteer for the super PAC.

Stewart declared Colbert vice president of youth outreach for the super PAC, which was renamed The Definitely Not Coordinated with Stephen Colbert Super PAC. Along with Potter, the three joined hands like a sports team and ? with thick irony ? cheered in unison: "Non-coordination!"

In 2007, Colbert attempted to enter the South Carolina primary but was stymied by filing fees. The super PAC could very well eliminate any such financial concerns. Colbert hasn't publically revealed the amount raised from viewer contributions by the PAC, but on Thursday he repeatedly hinted that it was a shockingly large amount.

Colbert has otherwise been very transparent about the PAC's workings, using it to parody the current system's contradictions and potential conflicts of interest. Political action committees stem from a 2010 Supreme Court decision that changed the rules of corporate political donations.

A Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday found that Colbert is polling ahead of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman in South Carolina. According to the survey, Colbert has 5 percent of the vote and Huntsman has 4 percent.

Upon reading those results on "The Report" on Wednesday, Colbert said: "This just got real."

Goodell: NFL to consider some full-time officials (AP)

BALTIMORE ? Aiming to ensure NFL rules are enforced the same way from game to game, the league will consider making about 10 officials full-time employees next season.

As of now, all game officials are part-time employees.

Responding to a question about consistency in officiating while speaking to a group of about 75 fans before Sunday's playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the proposal would bring a group of officials to the league offices in New York to help review game films and evaluate the calls.

They then would be spread out among the crews at games.

"Consistency is exactly what every club wants, and I think every fan wants. You want consistency in the way rules are applied," Goodell said. "We are contemplating this offseason taking some of those officials from the field who are now part time ? they have other jobs ? and making a certain number of them, let's say 10, full time."

Goodell also told the fans the rules committee will examine whether teams should be allowed to hire assistant coaches who left other teams during the same season, as happened with New England and Josh McDaniels. He returned to the Patriots in time for the playoffs after spending the regular season with the St. Louis Rams.

"We've talked to several club executives. I'm not getting a lot of reaction from the other clubs that this is unfair. They don't seem to think it's a big issue," Goodell said. "But it's something we'll talk about."

Among other topics Goodell addressed with fans, and later while speaking to reporters:

_He hopes the league and the players' union will be able to settle their differences on testing for human growth hormone before next season, but he wouldn't say he's confident that'll happen.

"There's certainly enough time. We had a meeting just on Friday between the two parties to try to address those issues," Goodell said. "We understand the issues they've raised. We've answered those questions. ... All of the scientists agree that this test is valid. So we think we have a valid test. It's been proven on a global basis. We hope to get it implemented as quickly as possible."

The new labor contract that ended the NFL lockout in August included a provision for HGH testing as soon as this season ? but only once the NFLPA approved the process. That hasn't happened, in part because the NFLPA says it needs more information about the test itself.

Asked by a reporter whether he's confident of getting a test in place for 2012, Goodell paused, then replied: "I'll tell you: Sure going to work as hard as we can to get it done, because I think it's important, not just for the game, but also for the players."

_He called the latest tweaks to concussion protocols ? including putting certified athletic trainers in booths at games to keep an eye out for possible head injuries, and adding video feeds on sidelines ? "significant improvements" and "two very positive steps."

_The new kickoff rules "achieved our objective" by reducing injuries, Goodell said.

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" is heating up with the second episode airing tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

During the premiere, we were introduced to the Situation's best friend, "The Unit," who managed to stir up some drama between Sitch, Snooki and her boyfriend, Jionni. We also witnessed the first (and certainly not the last) hookup of the season, between Pauly D and Snooki's friend Ryder.

Over the past few seasons, the cast of "Jersey Shore" have become sort of experts on the art of wooing the opposite sex, so when MTV News caught up with them recently, we had to ask them to lend us their valuable expertise on hooking up. Of course, they couldn't share all the tricks of the trade, but they did agree to tell us what not to do when.

"You should never text-message during hooking up," Pauly D said. "Put your phone away."

The Situation added, "You should never call another name. If her name is Sheila, don't call her Tawana."

The ladies of the house have some more sage advice for what you need to stay away from when putting the moves on someone new. "[Don't] throw it all out there," JWoww said. " 'I got kids, I was married, I was this, I'm bankrupt, I killed my mom' — you don't do that stuff."

According to Deena, one might want to keep their bodily functions to a minimum. "[Don't] fart or burp in their face," Deena said.

JWoww added, "[Don't] pick your nose. Don't do anything that's disgusting."

Don't miss "Jersey Shore" every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. For continuing "Shore" coverage, be sure to check in with MTV's Remote Control blog.
