Canadian Natural Resources Farms out Block 11B/12B Offshore South Africa

Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNR) and Total E&P South Africa BV will jointly explore Block 11B/12B offshore South Africa. The farm-out agreement will provide Total with a 50 percent working interest in the block and the right to operatorship, with CNR receiving an undisclosed upfront cash payment, a recovery of 50 percent of past incurred costs and a carry in the first exploration well drilled, up to a maximum of $150 million.

CNR has performed seismic studies on Block 11B/12B and now the newly formed consortium will work towards finalizing the location of the initial exploration well. Drilling is slated for 2014.

The Calgary-based energy firm chose Total after a "lengthy and thorough process" because of its expertise in deep water exploration.?

"The exploration potential in this offshore area of South Africa is exciting,? commented Steve Laut, president of Canadian Natural, in a press release. ?We are pleased to have the opportunity to work together with Total, a world class partner. The completion of this joint venture demonstrates the opportunities provided to the company through its international portfolio which contributes to our vast and diversified asset base. Working together with Total and the Government of South Africa, we are in a positive position to maximize shareholder value in this exciting prospect."

Situated in the Outeniqua Basin, Block 11B/12B lies 109 miles off the southern coast of South Africa and spans 4.6 million acres. Water depths range from 656 to 5,905 feet.?

Warne cards 71 at golf's Mecca St Andrews

Cricket great Shane Warne drained a seven-foot birdie putt on the final hole at St Andrews to complete a one-under round of 71 at the iconic Scottish golf venue.

Legspin legend Warne posted the scorecard of his "best ever round" on social media shortly after competing in the Dunhill Links Championship's pro-am tournament on Friday morning (AEST).

It would have been tough reading for some of golf's most seasoned professionals, with the larger-than-life 44-year-old recording par scores on the opening nine holes of the notoriously difficult Old Course.

A double-bogey on the 16th was a major blemish for the man with 708 Test wickets to his name but he recovered with yet another par and his ice-cool long putt on the 18th.

To put Warne's effort in perspective, his score was better than what Adam Scott and Tiger Woods managed in three of their four rounds in 2010 when The Open Championship was held at St Andrews.

On Friday, he got the better of major winners Vijay Singh (74), David Duval (73) and Louis Oosthuizen (74); and was hot on the heels of Retief Goosen (70) and Ernie Els (69).

Shane Warne and Peter O'Malley, who Warne bettered by three shots, were tied fourth in the pro-am at 11 under, five shots adrift of English professional Richard McEvoy and New York banker Michael Zankow.

"Thanks everyone for your tips & support ! I shot 71 off the stick today at St Andrews, my best ever round of golf #dunhilllinks," Warne posted on Twitter.

Todd Bridges remembers fatherly co-star Bain

By Seth Abramovitch , The Hollywood Reporter

The death of Conrad Bain?at age 89 has hit no one harder than Todd Bridges, who for eight seasons played adopted son to Bain's millionaire character Mr. Drummond on the hit NBC sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes."

Now the sole survivor of the show's core cast -- Dana Plato committed suicide in 1999, and Gary Coleman died after falling down a flight of stairs in 2010 -- Bridges says he'll miss the man who was his surrogate father both on and off the screen.

"This is probably one of the most heart-wrenching days I?ve had in a long time," Bridges, now 47, tells The Hollywood Reporter. "That Conrad?s not going to be around anymore to talk to. Whenever I needed advice, I?d call Conrad."

STORY: "Diff?rent Strokes" Dad Conrad Bain dies at 89

The two first met in 1977, when a 12-year-old Bridges -- who had already starred alongside Abe Vigoda?on ABC's "Barney Miller" spinoff, "Fish" --?was cast with Bain and Coleman to star in a 20-minute presentation for NBC executives. The chemistry between the trio was so effortless, the network brass bought a full season on the spot.

"First time in history they bought 26 shows based on a presentation like that -- a balcony scene that me, Conrad and Gary worked on together," Bridges recalls.

"Diff'rent Strokes" was an instant hit with audiences, which Bridges partly attributes to the country's frayed social landscape at the time: "It was during a time that race relations were kind of poor in America, and it kind of hit home that it doesn?t matter what color you are. Whoever God puts in front of you is who you?re supposed to love," he said.

Bridges and Bain instantly bonded, as they'd both regularly show up early to work -- and the fatherly Bain filled a void in Bridges' life.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's notable deaths of 2012

"He was a really good man," Bridges says. "He really was like Mr. Drummond. Just an all-around nice guy. He treated me better than my own father treated me."

The ensuing years brought plenty of turmoil for the show's young stars, including Bridges' much-publicized addiction to crack cocaine in his 20s and an arrest for the murder of a drug dealer, for which he was later acquitted. Through it all, Bridges says, Bain was there to offer a sympathetic ear and his advice.

Eventually, Bridges got clean and had a family of his own, beginning with son?Spencir Bridges -- at 15, now a busy working actor who has appeared on episodes of "House M.D." and "iCarly" and in the 2003?Eddie Murphy film "Daddy Day Care."

"When I had my son, I took him to Conrad's house and he loved him, played chess with him, called him his grandson," Bridges says. "He just really knew how to take care of people."

"I cried all day. I can?t even cry anymore. I'll truly miss that man," he adds.

Oil jumps above $94 on US supply report

The price of oil jumped above $94 a barrel Wednesday after an unexpected drop in U.S. crude supplies.

Benchmark oil was up 92 cents to $94.20 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oil supplies fell by 1 million barrels, or 0.3 percent, to 360.3 million barrels last week. Analysts expected an increase of 2.5 million barrels. The drop was due mainly to a decline in imports. Gasoline supplies grew less than expected as refineries slowed output.

Still, supplies of oil and gasoline remain above average for this time of year, with crude inventories nearly 9 percent higher than a year ago and gasoline levels more than 3 percent higher. Domestic production of crude, at more than 7 million barrels a day, is the highest in 20 years.

Prices at the pump continue to slip lower. The national average for a gallon of gas is now $3.29, down about a penny from a week ago and 9 cents less than at this time last year.

Going forward, trading will be watching for the latest reading on China's economic growth Friday and contentious negotiations in Washington over the nation's borrowing limit.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was up 37 cents to $110 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 2 cents to $2.73 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 7 cents to $3.38 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil was flat at $3.01 a gallon.

PST: Borchers has quad surgery, out indefinitely

If there was one team that could afford to lose their top two defenders, it was Real Salt Lake, However, with today?s news that former MLS Best XI defender Nat Borchers is out indefinitely after surgery on his right?quadriceps, we?ll get a good idea how much depth Garth Lagerway and Jason Kreis have at center half. Come first kick, RSL will be without both of last year?s first choice central defenders.

Olave?s December trade to New York left Nats Borchers as the linchpin of RSL?s defense, but after lingering issues with his quad weren?t resolved with rest and rehab, Borchers underwent surgery the first week of January to repair a torn tendon. Recovery will ?delay his preseason preparations,? according to the club, making it difficult to predict when he?ll be fit to return.

It sounds like Real Salt Lake needs to get Borchers back on the field before they?ll know when he?ll be to speed with his teammates. Does that mean April? May? It?s difficult to tell, but the language sounds more cautious than ominous.

This is where it?s nice to have both Chris Schuler and Kwame Watson-Siriboe. That duo may have sat behind Olave and Borchers on last year?s depth chart, but they?re defenders a number of Major League Soccer teams would love?to have in their starting XIs. No, they won?t challenge for Best XI appearances, but they?ll be fine filling in for should Borchers spend most of the spring rounding into shape.

And what if Schuler of Watson-Siriboe go down? That?s where former Toronto first round pick Aaron Maund comes in. And there?s always the possibility of moving Chris Wingert in while giving Kenny Mansally time at left back. As usual, Garth Lagerway?s acquired options.

Still, there?s some suggestion Real Salt Lake may change their draft strategy based on Borchers? health, a view echoed at MLSSoccer.com. Lagerway very well might change course on Thursday, but I?m having trouble seeing it. The team?s known about Borchers? health concerns all winter, so the possibility of surgery will not have caught them off guard.

You have to think depth at center half was on Lagerway?s mind when he acquired Maund. He wasn?t leaving this one for the draft.?If Lagerway goes central defense on Thursday, it?s likely because RSL feels that center half is the best player on the board.

In the interim, RSL still has their usual depth in the middle. With Olave gone and Borchers out, they may not have the MLS-elite quality at the top of the depth chart, but they have more than enough cover to make it through Borchers? recuperation.

Jailed Kurdish rebel chief demands Paris murders solved soon

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan called on French police to solve the murders of three Kurdish activists quickly, his brother said, but he gave no indication their killing would disrupt nascent peace talks between him and Turkish officials.

The three Kurdish women, one a co-founder of Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group, were found dead in Paris on Thursday in execution-style killings regarded by many as an attempt to sabotage the fledgling peace moves.

Ocalan's younger brother Mehmet, who visited him in his jail on the island of Imrali near Istanbul on Monday, said the PKK leader did not comment on the peace process but may make a statement later if Kurdish political party leaders visit him.

The dialogue, which media reports say yielded a framework for full negotiations, began after Ocalan called on hundreds of PKK inmates to end a hunger strike last November. His brother Mehmet had conveyed that appeal after a previous visit.

"He was very saddened by the massacre in France. He condemns it," Mehmet Ocalan told reporters on his return from Imrali late on Monday. "They must solve this massacre right away."

"This massacre was a sign. Hence he was very downcast. He sent his condolences to the families of the three Kurdish women who were killed," he said, without clarifying what the sign was.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said initial evidence suggested an internal feud in the PKK or a bid to derail the peace talks may have motivated the killings. The PKK blamed shadowy elements within the Turkish state or foreign powers.

French investigators have given no indication as to who might be responsible for the deaths.

Turkey disclosed in the New Year it had begun discussing with Ocalan how to end a conflict in which more than 40,000 people have been killed since the PKK took up arms in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish homeland in Turkey's southeast.

Ocalan was long held in virtual isolation after his capture in 1999. Access to him remains tightly controlled and his lawyers have not seen him for 16 months.

Kurdish politicians have demanded improvements in his jail conditions. Erdogan said last week that such changes would be limited but that he would be given a television.

Asked about those reports, Mehmet said his brother had not requested a television. "It was not his own demand. The prison governor convinced him and that's why he accepted," he said.

One of the three women killed in Paris was Sakine Cansiz, a founding PKK member well-known to Kurdish nationalists and believed to be an important PKK financier in Europe. PKK fighters are based mainly in northern Iraq.

Turkey, the United States and European Union designate the PKK a terrorist organization.

Aggressive breast cancer's metastatic path revealed

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Scientists at Weill Cornell Medical College have discovered the molecular switch that allows aggressive triple negative breast cancer cells to grow the amoeba-like protrusions they need to crawl away from a primary tumor and metastasize throughout the body. Their findings, published in Cancer Cell, suggest a novel approach for developing agents to treat cancer once it has spread.

"Metastasis can be lethal, and our findings point to potential targeted treatments to stop the spread of this aggressive breast cancer," says the study's senior investigator, Dr. Vivek Mittal, an associate professor of cell and developmental biology and director of the Lehman Brothers Lung Cancer Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College.

According to researchers, if such agents were developed, they would perhaps be the first to specifically treat cancer metastasis, importantly in patients whose tumors have already spread. They would also be among the first designed to restore the function of a microRNA (miRNA), a small, non-coding RNA that regulates gene expression, which is crucial to cancer spread. While distinct miRNA "signatures" have been found for many tumor types, including different breast cancers, their specific roles in later steps of cancer metastasis has been unclear, Dr. Mittal says.

In the study, researchers set out to identify a miRNA that impacts metastasis without affecting primary tumor growth, as well as address its underlying molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential against metastatic breast cancer. They discovered that a miRNA known as miR-708 is inhibited in metastatic triple negative breast cancer. They found that miR-708 acts as a metastatic tumor inhibitor, and when its function is restored, the tumors do not spread or form lethal macrometastases.

Silenced miRNA Inhibitor Molecule Can Be Switched Back On

Triple negative breast cancer has the worst outcome of all breast cancer subtypes because of its high recurrence rate and metastatic spread. This is why the research team chose to examine the role of miRNAs in the spread of triple negative breast cancer, which accounts for 15-25 percent of all breast tumors. The cancer is named "triple negative" because its tumor cells do not display two hormone receptors (estrogen and progesterone) or HER2/neu growth factor, which each form the basis of current targeted breast cancer treatments.

Using genome wide miRNA sequencing, Dr. Mittal and his research team found in human samples of triple negative breast cancer that miR-708 was significantly down-regulated with its normal expression curtailed. In both laboratory cells and in animal studies, the researchers identified that the normal role of miR-708 is to suppress the protein neuronatin, which is located on the membrane of a cell's endoplasmic reticulum -- an organelle that stores calcium. Neuronatin helps control how much calcium leaves that organelle.

"It is calcium that provides legs to cancer cells to help them escape a tumor. So miR-708 acts as a suppressor of metastasis by keeping neuronatin in check," Dr. Mittal says. "If miR-708 is itself suppressed, there is an increase in production of neuronatin proteins, which then allows more calcium to leave the endoplasmic reticulum and activate a cascade of genes that turn on migratory pathways leading to metastasis."

Researchers found that delivering synthetic miR-708, carried by bubbles of fat, blocked metastatic outgrowth of triple negative breast cancer cells in the lung of mice. This makes miR-708 a promising therapeutic against metastatic breast cancer. The researchers also discovered that polycomb repressor complex proteins are responsible for silencing miR-708. These proteins remodel the way DNA is packaged in order to epigenetically silence genes.

Dr. Mittal adds that the findings suggest that pharmacological agents now being tested in lymphoma cancer cells may also help to restore miR-708 in triple negative breast cancer. These drugs are designed to inhibit histone-lysine N-methyltransferase EZH2, the member of the polycomb group that directly silences miR-708.

"It is exciting that there are now drugs that can turn off the silencing of these critical genes. They could very well work for this aggressive breast cancer," says Dr. Mittal. "Finding that there may be a way to shut down the spread of an aggressive breast cancer -- which is the only way that triple negative breast cancer can be controlled and lives spared -- is very promising."

"These study results are terrific," says co-author Dr. Linda Vahdat, director of the Breast Cancer Research Program, chief of the Solid Tumor Service and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and medical oncologist at the Iris Cantor Women's Health Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "It not only offers us an avenue to treat metastatic triple negative breast cancer in the short-term, but also gives us the roadmap to prevent metastases in the long-run. We are anxious to get this into the clinic and are working as quickly as possible towards that end."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. companies increased their stockpiles a steady pace in November from October, responding to a solid increase in sales.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that business inventories grew 0.3 percent in November, matching the October gain.

Sales rose 1 percent in November, the best showing since a 1.2 percent rise in September. In October, sales had fallen 0.3 percent, reflecting in part disruptions caused by Superstorm Sandy.

More restocking leads to more factory production, which boosts economic growth. Faster restocking helped the economy grow at a 3.1 percent annual rate from July through September.

Most economists say inventory growth has slowed from this summer, a key reason many are predicting economic growth weakened to a rate below 2 percent in the October-December quarter.

The inventory to sales ratio has held steady since August, a sign that businesses were not expecting much growth in sales. In November, the ratio was 1.28 months. That means it would take about five weeks to exhaust stockpiles at the November sales pace.

The sales gain in November was led by a 2.3 percent surge in demand at the wholesale level. A separate report Tuesday showed that retail sales increased again in December, rising 0.5 percent, the best showing since September.

Total inventories rose to a seasonally adjusted $1.62 trillion in November, up 23.9 percent from the recession low hit in September 2009.

Retail inventories rose 0.6 percent in November, leading all categories. Wholesale stockpiles grew 0.3 percent, while manufacturing inventories were flat.

Income growth remains weak, constraining the amount that consumers can devote to increased spending. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Job growth has been steady, although unemployment is still high at 7.8 percent. In December, employers added 155,000 jobs, roughly matching the monthly average in 2011 and 2012.

The economy has shown some signs of improvement. The once-battered housing market is recovering, which should lead to more construction jobs in the coming months. Autos sales in 2012 were the best in five years. And a gauge of U.S. service firms' business activity expanded in December by the most in nearly a year.

The Law of Attraction History | Self Improvement Secrets

You need a 7 Day BrainwashIt is important that you understand that the law of attraction is not simply New Age nonsense (many descriptions of the law of attraction refer to it as a product of a New Age Mentality). The principles of the law of attraction date back far beyond the new found popularity of the New Age.

The immortal Buddha was actually one of the first to introduce man to the law of attraction. He said, ?What you have become is what you have thought.? This was a principle that the people of the east were acquainted with for centuries before it began to sweep into the western hemisphere.

The concept of karma may also have drawn its roots from the law of attraction. Karma states that you will eventually be revisited by that which you have sent out into the universe. If you have practiced kindness and compassion, you will receive it in kind. If you have been deliberately cruel to another, you will receive back into your life that cruelty which you have sent out. Your actions and thoughts morph into physical entities, causing the universe to react in kind.

The law of attraction began to gain popularity in the western hemisphere in the 19th century, as people began to appreciate the power of positive thinking and how to apply it to their lives. This new concept was first introduced to the general public by William Walker Atkinson, the editor of New Thought magazine, who published a book called Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World? in 1906. Other works followed, including the famous Master Key System? by Charles F Haanel, and Think and Grow Rich?, written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill.

As you can see, the concept of the law of attraction is not new. The idea that thought can have a predominate affect on the course of a man?s destiny has been taught by wise men throughout the ages, and has given rise to a whole new era of beliefs. The principles have been used, either consciously or unconsciously, by the rich and successful for thousands of years.

The Secret?

You have probably heard of the movie, The Secret?- it has been largely responsible for the recent interest in the law of attraction and is well worth watching. The Secret? is actually based on older classics? written in the early part of the 20th Century, such as the Master Key System? and The Science of Getting Rich?. However, knowing about The Secret? (the law of attraction) is not enough- you have to learn how to apply it and how to control your thoughts and feelings so that your desires can manifest into reality.

Good Reads: Boomtown slum, democracy in progress, and 'rewilding' in the Netherlands

This week's good reads include a day in Kenya's bustling Kibera slum, the struggle to promote democracy in the Arab world, and a radical conservation theory in the Netherlands.

The image of an African shantytown does not usually conjure up hope for economic prosperity. But Kibera, one of Nairobi?s slums and arguably Africa?s largest slum, is exactly that for the Kenyans who call it home. In The Economist, a writer chronicled a day in Kibera, describing the slum?s ebbs and flows, capturing its entrepreneurial spirit. People from all over Kenya leave their towns and villages for a chance to find work in Kibera?s ?thriving economic machine.?

The half-mile-by-two-mile area accommodates roughly 1 million people, wedged together in repurposed wood-and-corrugated-tin-roof structures. The alleys that wind through the slum vary in size, but there is no room for cars. Many of the residents work in nearby factories or offices. Others find economic opportunity in providing goods and services for Kibera?s residents.

When Cecilia Achieng moved to the slum, she started a school, at first renting space from an empty church. She eventually saved enough money to build six makeshift classrooms. After school, Ms. Achieng starts her second job: catering. She caters church events, funerals, and is even trying to get into weddings. In the evening, Achieng goes door to door offering her services as a hairdresser.

?To equate slums with idleness and misery is to misunderstand them,? the correspondent writes. ?Slums are far from hopeless places; many are not where economic losers end up, but rather reservoirs of tomorrow?s winners.?

The promise of the Arab Spring

As post-Arab Spring countries struggle to establish democratic institutions, pessimism about their ultimate success misses a broader lesson: Stable democracies have historically evolved from violent uprisings, initial failures, and stumbling blocks.

?These troubles ... are not a bug but a feature ? not signs of problems with democracy but evidence of the difficult, messy process of political development through which societies purge themselves of the vestiges of dictatorship and construct new and better democratic orders,? writes Sheri Berman in Foreign Affairs.

Critics who see Egypt, Libya, and other transitioning countries as democratic failures ignore the inherited social, cultural, and political dynamics in these countries, and a broader historical perspective. New democracies are not blank slates, writes Ms. Berman. In the aftermath of overthrowing dictators, countries must overcome the baggage that comes with authoritarian regimes ? distrust, animosity, and lack of civil organizations to deal with people?s demands. Islamism is filling that void in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak?s fall as religious organizations were the only places where people could participate and express themselves.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler got thumbs up on Twitter as hosts of this year's Golden Globes.

"Can Tina and Amy host everything?" one user asked.

Their fellow "Saturday Night Live" alums Kristin Wiig and Will Ferrill also began trending after their bit presenting the award for lead actress in a motion picture comedy or musical.

The pair inaccurately recapped each of the nominee's films, and when they mentioned Meryl Streep the camera panned to her "Hope Springs" co-star Tommy Lee Jones, who wasn't laughing.

Soon Jones became a trending topic on Twitter and a clip of the moment went viral.

Viewers also took to social media to lament Daniel Day-Lewis getting the "wrap it up" music during his acceptance speech for the lead actor award.

They called the "Lincoln" actor a living legend who does not deserve to be played off the stage.

Twitter users may also have a longer memory than one might imagine.

"Homeland" is one of the most popular shows on TV, but when Damien Lewis took to the stage to accept his Golden Globe it reminded many of his performance in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers." That became a trending topic too.

QUICKQUOTE: "I'm really grateful. We got nominated for seven Oscars, including best picture. I was thrilled. I mean, if you can't be happy with that, your prospects for long-term happiness are probably pretty dim." ? Quentin Tarantino, who delves into Deep South history in his revenge saga "Django Unchained," says slavery continues in the United States after the Civil War. It has just taken on a different form.

"If you go to Malaysia, there's sexual slavery going on in places like that, but I'm more concerned about the slavery that is going on in America," Tarantino said backstage at Sunday's Golden Globes. "The drug laws that have put so many black males in jail that wouldn't have existed in the '70s, that is slavery. It is just straight up slavery as far as I'm concerned."

Tarantino won the screenplay award at the Globes for "Django."

Shooting a musical with more than 200 actors, someone was bound to lose their voice.

For "Les Miserables," that was Sacha Baron Cohen, and it caused a shutdown of production at one point.

"Only one man proved himself not to have the vocal stamina," the film's director, Tom Hooper, revealed at Sunday's Golden Globes.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Sacha Baron Cohen."

Baron Cohen's reaction to the revelation: He bowed and curtseyed.

Don't mess with Meryl.

That's what a lot of Twitter users were saying after Jennifer Lawrence accepted the Golden Globe for lead actress in a motion picture comedy or musical, looked it over and quipped, "What does it say? I beat Meryl!"

Meryl Streep was nominated in the same category for "Hope Springs."

"Who says that?" tweeted "Dancing With the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

Celeb blogger Perez Hilton cautioned, "Oh, no you didn't!!!! Meryl Streep is gonna haunt your dreams!!!!!!!!!!"

Lawrence was actually quoting a line from the movie "First Wives Club" starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.

Fans who got the joke were quick to point out she was not dissing Streep, who has more Golden Globe nominations than anyone.

Soon (hash)FirstWivesClub was trending too.

Say what?

While accepting her Golden Globe for best actress in a TV comedy series or musical, Lena Dunham gave a shoutout to Chad Lowe.

Why?

Because she had promised her mother and herself, Dunham said, that if she ever won such an award she wouldn't forgot to thank Lowe.

Hilary Swank, who was married to Lowe at the time, famously did forget him when she accepted her best actress Oscar in 2000 for "Boys Don't Cry."

It took the Golden Globes audience a few seconds to get the joke.

As for Lowe, he took to Twitter to joke, "You forgot to thank me?! After all we've been through? I'm shocked."

Julia Louis Dreyfus stood patiently in line for the restroom, as did Emily Blunt and Jane Lynch.

It's worth the wait: The place also doubles as a courtesy ER for beauty fixes.

Most big-name stars bypass the services, however. Apparently their glow is natural.

Toby Jones dropped a little scoop on the next chapter in "The Hunger Games" series.

"It's obviously bigger and a different kind of film this time, more centered on the games themselves," he said on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.

Jones was at the awards show as a nominee for best actor in a miniseries or movie for his performance as Alfred Hitchcock in HBO's "The Girl." He lost out to Kevin Costner.

The actor will reprise his role of Claudius Templesmith in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," and of course Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence will be back as Katniss Everdeen.

There was big-name celebrity heat on the Golden Globes red carpet. That was about the only heat to be found anywhere in Beverly Hills, however.

On a sunny afternoon, when temps dipped unusually low into the 50s, goose bumps popped on the sinewy arms of actresses like Debra Messing, Connie Britton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Sally Field.

"No, I'm not wearing any leggings or long underwear," a smiling Louis-Dreyfus said, patting her strapless gown's layers of tulle, silk and lace.

Asked how she was coping with the chill, Messing replied, "Not well."

Britton didn't mind as much.

"I don't think it's that bad out here," she said. "Maybe it's the adrenaline or something. It's fun to wear a strapless dress to an awards ceremony, so sometimes you got to suck it up."

Golden Globe nominees Steve Buscemi and Louis C.K. shared some love inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel International Ballroom as they waited to find out whether they'd go home winners or losers.

"Thanks, it was fun," the comedian said sheepishly after the star of "Boardwalk Empire" complimented him on his Globe-nominated performance in "Louie."

Buscemi was nominated for best actor in a TV drama, while C.K. was up for best actor in a TV musical or comedy.

Elsewhere in the ballroom, Kathryn Bigelow and Jodie Foster made a beeline for each other, navigating around several star-filled dinner tables to exchange greetings and a hug.

As the announcer shouted out that it was time to clear the red carpet and get inside for the Golden Globes show, Anne Hathaway managed to quickly sign her name to a fan's autograph book.

George Clooney and his fan weren't so lucky.

The fan-friendly actor was heading toward the bleacher crowd before he was ushered inside just in time for cameras to roll.

A tube of lip gloss, some mascara, an iPhone and her driver's number.

That's all Megan Hilty of "Smash" was carrying in her golden clutch at this year's Golden Globes.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had even less in their itty-bitty purses. They were empty.

The ceremony's co-hosts whipped them open and held them upside down on the red carpet for the "Today" show co-hosts before heading inside to prove nothing was weighing them down Sunday.

He is Bond after all. He has to look cool. Even when it's cold.

With the sun going down and temperatures dropping, Daniel Craig strolled down the Golden Globes red carpet still wearing his sunglasses.

As fans shouted his name, the man who plays James Bond turned to the crowd and waved, flashbulbs flashing in his face and reflecting off his shades.

No Further Restrictions On Fixed Odds Betting Terminals | Business ...

Peter Amsel

uk-fixed-odds-betting-terminals-crackThe UK government has decided not to impose further restrictions on the use of fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) in betting shops, disappointing opposition MPs, documentary news producers and other gambling scolds. Culture Minister Hugh Robertson, whose brief includes gambling issues, told Parliament that while ?common sense suggests? problem gambling stemming from FOBTs was a ?major problem ? there is a lack of evidence to back that up.? Irate opposition MPs penned a joint letter to The Guardian in which they expressed their opposition to the number of shops allowed on certain high streets, proposals to lift the cap on the number of FOBTs each shop can contain, plus the irksome fact that nothing really rhymes with FOBT, preventing them from writing catchy slogans to chant at anti-gambling rallies. (Fine, we made up that last one.)

There?s much to quibble about with these critics? positions, such as their description of punters being ?enticed off the high street? by such machines, as if FOBTs were scantily clad women luring unsuspecting sex-starved sailors into a dark alley where club-wielding accomplices lay in wait. As Association of British Bookmakers? CEO Dirk Vennix put it, the overwhelming majority of FOBT users are perfectly equipped to ?think about what they spend and how much they can lose ? they are not stupid.?

But the biggest howler made by these critics is that FOBTs represent the ?crack cocaine of gambling.? That would no doubt infuriate US anti-gambling politicians, who have already staked out a well-worn claim for online gambling as the real crack cocaine of gambling. But the UK already has online gambling, so we guess it?s whatever?s new and popular that strikes narco-terror in the hearts of anti-gambling types. The Campaign for Fairer Gambling won?t be satisfied until FOBTs have been utterly eradicated from high street betting shops because they?re simply too addictive. You know, just like crack.

CRACK ISN?T SO WACK?
But dare we say it? Crack appears to have been given a bad rap. While it?s supposedly common knowledge that one hit on a crack pipe is but the first step on the road to blowing strangers in alleyways for $5 a pop, the actual research suggests crack is nowhere near as addictive as the initial flurry of lurid media reports suggested.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) ? a US federal government research outfit ? did a survey in 1991 that determined the number of respondents who?d ever used powder cocaine and had done so in the past month was about one in twelve (8%). Meanwhile, 12.3% of respondents who had ever smoked crack said they?d smoked a rock in the past month. Admittedly, that?s a higher number than the powder cocaine users, but it still means that seven of eight people who had ever tried crack hadn?t felt the need to use it for at least 30 days, and there was no suggestion those who had were daily users.

Doubling down on this notion, a NIDA survey of high school students found only one in 35 of those who?d ever tried crack reported daily or near-daily use ? comparable numbers for powder cocaine, and lower than the continuation rates for alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes and LSD. (But we guess ?the LSD of gambling? just doesn?t have the same ring to it.)

THE TRUTH WILL OUT
But as John P. Morgan and Lynn Zimmer concluded in The Social Pharmacology of Smokable Cocaine ? their contribution to the book Crack in America ? ?because smoking is a more direct mode of ingestion offering a much more intense high, the fraction of cocaine users who are drawn to crack is very likely to be among the heaviest users to begin with ? a more accurate interpretation of existing evidence is that already abuse-prone cocaine users are most likely to move toward a more efficient mode of ingestion as they escalate their use.? [Emphasis in the original.]

In other words, addiction-prone people get addicted to things, while the vast majority of us don?t. And while cocaine may be illegal in the UK, gambling isn?t. (And unlike crack, gambling has actual health benefits.) As such, the vast majority shouldn?t be deprived of their legal right to enjoy this form of entertainment because of the unfortunate actions of the few. So until people start clamoring for the repeal of the use of all credit cards because a statistical few shopaholics can?t stop indulging in retail therapy, we?re channeling our inner Chris Crocker by demanding that you LEAVE GAMBLING ALONE!

For God?s sake, no one should take this as an endorsement to go out and try crack cocaine. (Seriously. Don?t do it.) All we?re saying is that anti-gambling critics who refer to the hyper-addictive nature of this or that form of gambling by comparing it to crack cocaine clearly haven?t done their research on the drug itself, so why would you trust their claims about gambling?
