91% Lincoln

All Critics (158) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (143) | Rotten (15)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

Why don't we give the best actor Oscar to Daniel Day-Lewis right now and save everyone a lot of trouble?

A poignant portrait of Lincoln's last days, time spent as a marked man making his appointed rounds en route to his rendezvous with destiny.

The best aspect of Lincoln is the stellar performance by Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln. Day-Lewis always is devoted to finding the authenticity.

Lincoln's cast gets high marks for making the film more entertaining than it has any right to be.

Superlative and spellbinding, this surprisingly relevant observation on the essence of leadership is, undoubtedly, one of the best pictures of the year.

Figuratively, at its visual core, 'Lincoln' is a collection of Mathew Brady photos come to life. Daniel Day-Lewis dominates. His Oscar worthy performance encompasses greatness...(He) IS Lincoln.

For all its good intentions and spurts of innovation, it never really comes alive as living, breathing history. Instead, it too often plays like an audio reading of the Congressional Record, with some unwieldy domestic scenes tossed in for good measure.

What I wanted to say to Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field: for God's sake, just stop and take your Oscars...you're breaking my heart and you're killing me.

Too long, too many side stories but great work from Daniel Day-Lewis. Director Steven Spielberg often shoots him in poses that make him look like Lincoln's famous penny.

No matter what, Lincoln is a sharp and patient movie that compares well to other contemplative films seen in recent years. Like The Social Network or Moneyball, we step inside the process and explore it in vivid detail.

A lively, intelligent, and even fun examination of how one man inspired America to change forever.

Lincoln lives, vividly, in Daniel Day-Lewis' performance.

We end up believing in the actor, in Lincoln himself, and in his mission - if not exactly the self-imposed pomp and circumstance of the history lesson.

Lincoln peels back the mythos just enough to give us glimpses of our 16th President as a living, breathing man and the result of this loving portrait is one of the best movies of the year.

This is how the political sausage is made and it will make you feel better about American Democracy. Not many movies can say that.

This is a movie that embraces the fullness of English eloquence and dares the audience to keep up.

Bieber, Taylor Swift early winners at American Music Awards

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Canadian pop star Justin Bieber and country-pop darling Taylor Swift were among the early winners at the American Music Awards on Sunday, picking up accolades in the pop and country categories at a live televised awards ceremony.

Bieber, 18, picked up the award for favorite pop/rock male artist, beating out stiff competition from Flo Rida, Pitbull and Usher. The star walked the red carpet with his mother, Pattie Mallette, after his widely reported split from former Disney star and girlfriend Selena Gomez.

"This is for all the haters who thought that maybe I was just here for one or two years, but I feel like I am going to be here for a very long time," Bieber said on stage, dedicating his win to his mother.

Swift, 22, scored the favorite female country artist award, edging out Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. She thanked her fans in her acceptance speech, saying, "I'm really, really happy right now and that's all because of you."

Nicki Minaj picked up the award for favorite rap/hip hop album of the year, with "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded," over nominees Drake and newcomer rapper J. Cole.

The American Music Award nominees and winners are voted for by fans online, and the awards are handed out during a live three-hour broadcast featuring performances by artists.

R&B star Usher kicked off the night with an electric performance on a laser-filled stage, followed by Carly Rae Jepsen singing hits including "Call Me Maybe," while boy band The Wanted, who are up for favorite pop/rock group, donned suits to sing their latest, "I Found You."

Former "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson belted out a medley of her tracks including "Miss Independent" and "What Doesn't Kill You," and pop singer Ke$ha hit the stage in a tribal-themed performance of her latest single "Die Young."

The awards show, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, treated the audience to some of its greatest moments, including R&B star Beyonce performing "Single Ladies" at the 2008 show and a clip of Michael and Janet Jackson as children accepting an award in 1975.

R&B star Rihanna, 24, and rapper Nicki Minaj, 29, went into Sunday's show leading with four nods each, battling each other in the favorite pop/rock female artist category.

Rihanna will also face stiff competition from Bieber, Maroon 5, Drake and Katy Perry for the night's top prize, the coveted artist of the year.

Rihanna wasn't expected to be at the awards show on Sunday, as she is in Berlin, midway through a seven-day tour across seven cities around the world promoting her upcoming "Unapologetic" album.

The race for new artist of the year will also be tight, as newcomers One Direction, Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen, indie-pop band fun. and rapper J. Cole will compete for the accolade.

My Mother the Car Bomb - haberarts.com in New.York: John Haber's ...

Finishing up the semester and finals? It may help to remember that life imitates art. And now life imitates writing about art. No, make that teaching about art based on writing about an entirely fictional performance piece about speaking about art. All based, you see, on real writing and speaking about art.

Before I get to the details and explain, I admit to a personal stake in this, as it concerns an audience for my writing about art. Last month, I heard from the education and tour manager for an upstate museum. The Burchfield Penney Art Center, a name new to me, is on the campus of Buffalo State College. It has, for a while, been using something of mine for docent training (with due credit) and finally asked for permission to continue. I was delighted. I feel like an authority on arts education already. From Fred Wilson's Art in Our Time (Metro Pictures, 1998)

Only one thing: my docent exercises were meant as a joke. The center was using ?Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Docent,? which I called ?a work for performance in thirteen parts, never to be enacted?but always possible. Perhaps in rehearsal this very moment, to take you by surprise at that very next encounter with art.? My performers would pose alternatively as a tour group and its leader, without informing the museum. Each of the thirteen skits parodies what actual docents do.

In fact, they parody what one docent actually did to me. I had treated myself to that wish of a lifetime?a trip to Houston, its museum, the Rothko Chapel, and the Menil Foundation. The quiet of the last two was truly special, although I hear that tour groups, mostly from abroad, have since turned the Rothko Chapel into a crowd scene. Mark Rothko did not have that in mind. As for the Menil Foundation, I shared it with almost no one except for a docent tour, and we crossed paths only once. And I blew it.

I had successfully avoided them until I came to a Picasso woman, one of those colorful works that still has people arguing about Pablo Picasso, his loves, and a male willingness to take advantage of them. The docent turned not to a member of her tour, but to me, for her group?s pleasure at what some dumb stranger would say. How would I feel, she asked, if this were my mother? Oh, I suppose she would deserve worse, but I stammered something innocuous about what I thought was a fine, inoffensive portrait. At any rate, I fell back on saying so. A few months later, nursing what I wished I had been clever enough to say, I riffed on it (and in my version ?the audience member responds with a long, distraught confessional about his mother?).

So what's NEW!I wish I could say that I had created a profound piece of conceptual art or institutional critique. (Whether conceptual art should be realized, or ?materialized,? is actually a fun question.) Mostly, though, I was just having fun and hoping to entertain you, so give it a look. Maybe it is teaching New York State right now to love Picasso. Thankfully, too, the educator did understand that I was trying to be funny, a New Yorker?s prejudices about arts education and upstaters notwithstanding. She said it works all the same?or even because of that.

With luck, it gets me a bit more exposure. And with luck it is helping to expose more students and more of the community to serious art. That is the goal of all my writing and this site. I went online in the first place to extend the boundaries of reviews, from puff pieces and snap judgments, to allow for just that, and it has grown to hundreds of pages about thousands of artists. See, here I go on and on and on even when the subject is humor. Once again, my sorry life imitates art.

Read more, now in a feature-length article (and a funny one, honest) on this site.

First Step Finance told it's losing its credit licence - Investigations

The Office of Fair Trading says it will revoke the credit licence of First Step Finance Limited, which claims to offer "a complete solution to debt problems".

The watchdog ruled that the firm lacked integrity and misled consumers by not warning that they risked getting further into debt. It also failed to properly explain how its service operated and the costs involved.

"People in debt are often vulnerable and are entitled to expect the highest levels of integrity and transparency from debt management businesses," said David Fisher, OFT director of Consumer Credit.

"First Step Finance did not meet the OFT's exacting standards or its legal obligations so we are removing their licence."

The firm, run by 49-year-old Christine Whitehurst of Stockport, Cheshire, says that it will appeal against the decision. It is allowed to keep its licence until the end of an appeal process.

Update: Ahmad Butt of First Step Finance says that previous "historic issues" have been resolved and confirmed that the company will appeal against its licence being revoked, saying: "We strongly disagree with the decision and the adjudicator's justification for his conclusions".

CHICAGO (AP) ? Hall of Famer Mike Ditka has had a minor stroke, an ESPN producer said.

ESPN?s Seth Markman posted on Twitter that the former Chicago Bears coach and player fell ill Friday and will not appear on the network?s NFL shows this weekend.

Markman wrote that Ditka ?wanted everyone to know he?s ok.?

Ditka did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press.

He told the Chicago Tribune he was feeling ?good right now and it?s not a big deal.? He was playing cards at a suburban country club Friday when he noticed his hands ?weren?t working quite right,? and he then started having difficulty speaking.

The 73-year-old Ditka had a heart attack during the 1988 season when he was coaching the Bears.

The stroke came on the same day that a Lake County prosecutor said in court that Ditka?s son, Mark E. Ditka, tested positive for opiates during a pretrial screening earlier this month, according to the Tribune. The younger Ditka is awaiting trial on his fourth DUI charge.

Exposure to light at night may cause depression, learning issues, mouse study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? For most of history, humans rose with the sun and slept when it set. Enter Thomas Edison and colleagues, and with a flick of a switch, night became day, enabling us to work, play and post cat and kid photos on Facebook into the wee hours.

According to a new study of mice led by a Johns Hopkins biologist, however, this typical 21st-century scenario may come at a serious cost: When people routinely burn the midnight oil, they risk suffering depression and learning issues, and not only because of lack of sleep. The culprit could also be exposure to bright light at night from lamps, computers and even iPads.

"Basically, what we found is that chronic exposure to bright light -- even the kind of light you experience in your own living room at home or in the workplace at night if you are a shift worker -- elevates levels of a certain stress hormone in the body, which results in depression and lowers cognitive function," said Samer Hattar, a biology professor in the Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Published in the Nov. 14 advance online publication of the journal Nature, the mice study demonstrates how special cells in the eye (called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, or ipRGCs) are activated by bright light, affecting the brain's center for mood, memory and learning.

But the study involved mice, so why are we talking about humans? Hattar offers some insight: "Mice and humans are actually very much alike in many ways, and one is that they have these ipRGCs in their eyes, which affect them the same way," he said. "In addition, in this study, we make reference to previous studies on humans, which show that light does, indeed, impact the human brain's limbic system. And the same pathways are in place in mice."

The scientists knew that shorter days in the winter cause some people to develop a form of depression known as "seasonal affective disorder" and that some patients with this mood disorder benefit from "light therapy," which is simple, regular exposure to bright light.

Hattar's team, led by graduate students Tara LeGates and Cara Altimus, posited that mice would react the same way, and tested their theory by exposing laboratory rodents to a cycle consisting of 3.5 hours of light and then 3.5 hours of darkness. Previous studies using this cycle showed that it did not disrupt the mice's sleep cycles, but Hattar's team found that it did cause the animals to develop depression-like behaviors.

"Of course, you can't ask mice how they feel, but we did see an increase in depression-like behaviors, including a lack of interest in sugar or pleasure seeking, and the study mice moved around far less during some of the tests we did," he said. "They also clearly did not learn as quickly or remember tasks as well. They were not as interested in novel objects as were mice on a regular light-darkness cycle schedule."

The animals also had increased levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that has been linked in numerous previous studies with learning issues. Treatment with Prozac, a commonly prescribed anti-depressant, mitigated the symptoms, restoring the mice to their previous healthy moods and levels of learning, and bolstering the evidence that their learning issues were caused by depression.

According to Hattar, the results indicate that humans should be wary of the kind of prolonged, regular exposure to bright light at night that is routine in our lives, because it may be having a negative effect on our mood and ability to learn.

"I'm not saying we have to sit in complete darkness at night, but I do recommend that we should switch on fewer lamps, and stick to less-intense light bulbs: Basically, only use what you need to see. That won't likely be enough to activate those ipRGCs that affect mood," he advises.

This study was supported by a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Goldman names 70 partners to 2012 class

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc named 70 new partners to its 2012 partnership class, the smallest number since the investment bank went public in 1999.

Goldman's partner naming, a relic from its past as a private investment bank, occurs every two years and is a closely watched event on Wall Street. The prior partner class in 2010 included 110 people.

Goldman has been cutting staff since last year as it looks to cut costs in a weak revenue environment and the smaller partner number is reflective of that. The investment bank tries to keep its partner pool at around 1 percent of the overall workforce, which stood at 32,600 at September 30.

Among the new partners are Russell Horwitz, who is Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein's chief of staff; Kent Clark, an executive in the hedge fund products group of Goldman's asset management division; and Huw Pill, Goldman's chief European economist.

As of November 2, Goldman had 407 partners, according to a regulatory filing.

EU commission freezes airline emissions law

9 hrs.

BRUSSELS --?The European Union will conditionally put on hold its rule that all airlines must pay for their carbon emissions for flights to and from EU airports, the EU's executive said on Monday.

The freeze follows intense pressure on the EU to scrap its law and threats of a trade war from other countries, led by the United States, China and India.

Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said she had agreed "to stop the clock" to establish a positive atmosphere for international talks to hammer out an alternative global plan to tackle airline emissions.

"But let me be very clear: if this exercise does not deliver - and I hope it does - then needless to say we are back to where we are today with the EU ETS. Automatically."

Flights within the European Union will still have to pay for their carbon emissions under existing rules, and EU member states will have to endorse formally the Commission's proposed exemption.

Hedegaard said she had informed representatives of all 27 member states of the Commission's plan.

The Commission, the EU's executive, has said it will not change its rules unless the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) can reach agreement on an alternative scheme to help curb rising airline emissions.

Decade?of dithering
The EU agreed on its law after more than a decade of talks at the ICAO had led nowhere.

Efforts have intensified to get a deal since the start of this year, when the EU's requirement for all airlines to buy carbon emissions began to take effect.

The law is being phased in slowly, meaning the first bills will only be dispatched in April next year following the calculation of this year's emissions.

The proposed temporary waiver gives the ICAO until its general assembly next November to reach a global solution to airline emissions.

At talks last week at the ICAO in Montreal, Hedegaard said there was good progress.

"Nobody wants an international framework on aviation more than we do," Hedegaard said. "For the first time in years a global deal should be in reach."

The cost of the EU's aviation law per passenger amounts to 1 or 2 euros, but international hostility has been furious as non-EU nations have argued it amounts to an extraterritorial tax.

The EU ETS is meant to be the cornerstone of EU climate policy.

But early this year, the value of EU carbon permits fell to a record low of 5.99 euros ($7.61) per tonne of emissions under the pressure of surplus allowances as European economic activity and industry slump.

The Commission is proposing temporarily withholding permits to bolster the scheme and is expected to announce details of that plan this week.

On Monday, carbon emission permits rose nearly 5 percent as the market looked to the prospect of action to prop it up and ignored for now the likelihood that international carriers might start selling allowances.

"It is bearish because it will reduce the short position of the aviation sector. International flights have been under-allocated (with carbon permits). If they drop out now, the overall aviation sector will be less short," Jan Frommeyer, managing director of Tschach Solutions, said.

"Airlines might not sell permits right now, but I think they will over the coming weeks."?

War uproots 2.5 million Syrians, aid groups say

GENEVA (Reuters) - At least 2.5 million Syrians are believed to have fled their homes because of civil war, aid groups said on Tuesday, more than double previous estimates.

The figure comes from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, whose volunteers are on the frontlines of the 20-month conflict, delivering aid supplies and evacuating wounded.

"The figure they are using is 2.5 million. If anything, they believe it could be more, that this is a very conservative estimate," Melissa Fleming, chief spokeswoman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told a news briefing.

"So people are moving, people are really on the run, hiding. They are difficult to count and to access," she said.

Aid agencies had previously thought there were around 1.2 million internally displaced Syrians.

Only 5 percent of the 2.5 million are believed to be living in public facilities, including warehouses and schools, said Fleming. The rest are staying with host families, making it more difficult to count them.

In recent days, air strikes on the town of Ras al-Ain near the Turkish border have caused some of the biggest refugee movements of the conflict.

The United Nations said on Friday that up to 4 million people inside Syria will need humanitarian aid by early next year when the country is in the grip of winter, up from 2.5 million now whose needs are not fully met.

For now, the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) says its food rations are reaching some 1.5 million. The UNHCR aims to provide assistance to 500,000 in Syria by the end of the year, mainly blankets, clothing, cooking kits and jerry cans, Fleming said.

"Unfortunately the recent deliveries have been very difficult, marred by violence and insecurity also spreading to parts of the country that used to be relatively calm," she said.

A Syrian Arab Red Crescent warehouse in Aleppo was apparently hit by a shell, burning 13,000 blankets, she said. Unknown armed men hijacked a truck carrying 600 blankets on its way to Adra, outside Damascus.

The UNHCR has temporarily withdrawn about half of its 12 staff from north-eastern Hassaka province due to fierce fighting and insecurity, Fleming said.

"We see corresponding movement of populations there, Syrian Kurds for the most part, across the border into Iraq," she said.

More than 407,000 Syrian refugees have registered or await registration in the surrounding region - Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq - and more are fleeing every day, according to UNHCR.

The Many Advantages Of Good Dental Care | ArticleBro.com

How often do you go to your Houston dentist? Do you go regularly or is it something that you really do not like to do? Many people usually put off their semi-annual trip to the dentist because they are afraid. However, did you know that you really should not put off that checkup every six months? Do you know that a dental exam can reveal a lot more than whether or not you have a cavity or gum disease? There are many advantages to making the appointment with your Houston dentist.

Assessing Your Overall Oral Health

At first glance in the mirror, you may not be able to tell the condition of your teeth. Your teeth might appear to be normal looking when you smile wide in a mirror, but is that really how they are on the inside of your mouth? You cannot really see what is going on with the back of your teeth or the roof of your mouth. You could be having issues with your bones that are not visible just to the naked eye. A Houston Dentist has all the right equipment to be able to give your mouth a very thorough examination that you could not possibly do inside of your home.

Checking For The Possible Decay Of Your Teeth

Are you brushing your teeth the way you really should be? Do you take the time to make sure you are going along the front of your teeth then behind them as well? Your teeth are round in some areas and flat on other areas, which can make them a little tough to get clean. You can try many different kinds of toothbrushes, but how do you know you really are cleaning your teeth properly? You may have spots that are not getting the plaque removed from them and there may be the start of tooth decay.

If left unchecked or untreated, tooth decay can continue to rot your teeth until they have to be either filled or removed. By going to get your teeth checked every six months or less, you can make sure that your teeth are not showing signs of decay. Your Houston dentist will also be able to tell if you are not cleaning your teeth properly and either shows you what to do or suggest methods you can use to really get into those hard-to-reach places between teeth.

When the time rolls around for you to go to your dentist, you may dread it. However, that trip to your Houston dentist
really can pay off for you in a big way. You cannot always tell that something is wrong with your teeth, like gum issues or tooth decay. You may not be able to know that your oral routine is not doing its proper job without consulting a professional.

Crux Crux360 (for iPad)

The Crux360 keyboard case ($99 direct) turns your iPad into a laptop. It works with the iPad 2 , third-generation, and fourth-generation iPads. Aside from minor cosmetic differences, the Crux360 looks very similar to the $150 ClamCase. Upon further inspection, the keyboard feel and layout is different, but both have the same 360-degree hinge mechanism. As such, the Crux360 functions as a sturdy and infinitely variable stand for your iPad. Unfortunately, its keyboard is a bit too cramped, and it adds significant bulk compared with our current Editors' Choice, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover.

Design, Setup, and Keyboard
If you've seen the ClamCase, the Crux360 will be instantly familiar. It replicates the look and feel of a small netbook, with the iPad snapping securely into one half and a full QWERTY keyboard on the other half. The case measures 9.7 by 8 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.6 pounds, which is more than twice as thick and heavy as the 0.31-inch and 11.36-ounce Logitech Ultrathin. Still, the Crux360 offers far greater protection and options as a stand for your iPad.

Inline

The magic is in the 360-degree hinge, which allows you to use your iPad in laptop form or bend it all the way around to any angle. The Crux360 is made entirely from matte black plastic. The only discernible differences between the Crux and the ClamCase are a cutout on the back, exposing the iPad's back, and a few minor Crux flourishes sprinkled throughout.

Setup is as simple as snapping the iPad into the case, pressing the Power button, then pressing the Bluetooth button. The latter isn't clearly labeled, which might be confusing at first, but a blue LED blinks to indicate pairing mode. Once paired, the keyboard works exactly like any other Bluetooth keyboard. Though it snaps in easily, removing the case require a bit too much force. There's a micro USB port along the right edge, which charges the keyboard with the included cable. If you're looking for a greener alternative, the Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio?is powered by light and will never need to be plugged in.

Instead of island or chiclet style keys like we've seen on most other folio options, the Crux360's keyboard is a faithful recreation of traditional sculpted keys with flat tops and slightly sloped sides. Even the proportions of the keys closely resemble those found on laptops like older ThinkPads. But where that style worked fine on full-sized setups, the Crux360's keyboard is a bit too cramped for my taste. In testing, I had to keep my fingers tightly together to stay accurate, which proved to be less comfortable than my experience with the chiclet keys on the Logitech Ultrathin and Solar Keyboard Folio. After a day of use, though, I got acclimated to the keyboard and could type quickly and accurately. There's also a dedicated row of Function keys for media control and commands like cut, copy, and paste.

Conclusions
The Crux360 is essentially the ClamCase with a more exposed back and different keyboard layout. The keyboard isn't quite as roomy as the ClamCase, but the Crux360 also retails for $50 less and offers the same versatile 360-degree hinge. Really though, you get a keyboard folio for the keyboard, and in that respect, the Crux360 falls short of the very similar ClamCase.?Make no mistake, this case, like the ClamCase, will add significant bulk to your iPad?more than double the thickness and weight of the iPad itself or the sleek Logitech Ultrathin. If you're looking for more substantial protection for your iPad than the Logitech Ultrathin delivers, and also want the freedom of an infinitely variable stand, then the Crux360 is a nice affordable alternative to the ClamCase. ?

Cutting calories in drinks is key to weight control - KansasCity.com

By EDWARD M. EVELD

The Kansas City Star

Sixteen-year-old Montana Ivory had been an excellent customer for Coke, Mountain Dew and Monster Energy ? until he got the message about calories.

?I?d end up drinking a half-liter and not even notice it was gone,? Ivory said. ?And I didn?t pay attention that a serving size is 8 ounces, and I would drink four or five times that.? After Ivory attended a program at the University of Kansas Medical Center, he started reading labels and rejecting sugary drinks. Not easy.?I was unhappy because I love that stuff,? he said. ?But now my potbelly is starting to shrink down.?While the multibillion-dollar sugary beverages industry ? soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, coffee concoctions ? flows happily on, the science is becoming crystal clear: If you want to lose or control weight, drink no calories. Or very few. It?s the same for old and young. In a new and unusual study of more than 200 overweight or obese 14- to 16-year-olds, researchers delivered bottled water and diet drinks to families, then counseled them to drink the no-calorie beverages rather than their usual sweetened drinks. After a year, participants who received the water and diet drinks gained an average 4 pounds less than the control group, a significant finding considering it was the only lifestyle change in the study, said Cara Ebbeling of Boston Children?s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.Ivory wasn?t in the Boston study, but he did lose 15 pounds, down to about 200, and ultimately wants to weigh closer to 170. He?s also eating better and exercising more. Doable??If I stick to the plan,? he said. The message is out there, the science is in, but many of us are still guzzling the calories. Americans consume 300 calories more a day than they did three decades ago, and a substantial part of that increase comes from beverages. It?s a hard habit to break. One problem, Ebbeling said, may be that people aren?t distinguishing between sensations of hunger and thirst. Consciously and correctly responding to those cues is key, she said.?When you?re thirsty, you need water as opposed to calories,? she said. ?Calories are needed when you?re hungry.?A big issue is ready availability. An important idea in the study, Ebbeling said, was to change the home environment so that sugar-free drinks were available ? and to encourage choosing them over sweetened beverages. The ubiquity of giant drinks was the reason for the recent New York City ban of sweetened beverages larger than 16 ounces. Recent ballot measures in two California cities would have taxed sugary beverages to the tune of $1.44 for a 12-pack, but voters rejected both proposals last Tuesday. And earlier this month, Children?s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City announced that starting in January, sugary drinks would not be sold in the hospital.Joan O?Keefe, a registered dietitian and Kansas City area nutrition counselor, said some of her toughest weight loss cases are among those who drink a lot of calories.?It?s huge,? she said, ?this infusion of soda pop and things like Gatorade, Powerade, Fruitopia. And coffee drinks with all the syrups in them.?While the body must deal with all the added calories of sweetened drinks, those beverages don?t send the ?full? message to the brain that comes with food, O?Keefe said. The result is way too many calories, day after day.One way to combat the desire for soda, she said, is with sparkling water.Besides the sweetness, it?s the feel of carbonation in the mouth that holds much of soda?s appeal, so switching to no-calorie flavored carbonated water ? her family likes Lacroix ? can help break the soda habit.Diet drinks? Not a favorite of many nutritionists. They worry about the potential ill effects of some compounds in diet sodas. And there?s concern that artificial sweeteners might actually increase cravings, leading to more eating and added pounds. But new studies by researchers in Denmark found that diet cola behaved the same as water in terms of appetite and weight gain. Bjorn Richelsen of Aarhus University Hospital said four beverages were analyzed: Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, milk and water. One hypothesis was that Diet Coke would enhance appetite, but that was not the case, Richelsen said in an email. No difference was found in the calorie intake of study participants in the hours after drinking the diet soda or water. And in a longer-term study, no weight gain was associated with Diet Coke.More study is needed about the effects of soda drinking in large quantities and over time, nutritionists said.Jim Heeter hasn?t messed with sugary drinks for years, even before his recent weight loss competition with Kansas City Mayor Sly James. But the president of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce said his strategy included upping his water consumption ?enormously? while throttling back on Diet Coke. One treat he won?t give up is an occasional Lost Trail diet root beer.?Other people might get home and have a martini or Scotch,? said Heeter, who won the five-month ?Not So Big KC Challenge? over James. ?I have Lost Trail over cracked ice. No caffeine. No calories.?Ann Davis, the director of KU Med?s Healthy Hawks program, the one attended by Montana Ivory, said that while the weight program emphasizes beverages with no calories, it doesn?t take a stand on diet drinks.?We leave that up to families,? she said. ?Some parents are OK with diet drinks, and some are not.?The program gives teens like Montana examples of how much exercise it would take to burn off the calories in sweetened beverages, Davis said, and shows them that not just soda but juices and sports drinks are crammed with calories. If they drink 400 extra calories, a big cola of about 36 ounces, for instance, it would take at least an hour of brisk walking to burn through those calories. They complete a worksheet to help them make the link: calories in, calories out.Adults also need the wake-up call. Jan Schmidt, exercise physiologist and trainer at Bene-Fit Health and Fitness, said that while helping clients with exercise she also asks about extra calories they may be consuming. Beverages often top the list.Schmidt recommends a weaning program. Assess those extra calories and start by cutting them in half. If you drink 200 calories a day in a sweetened beverage, make it 100.?A reduction of 100 calories a day knocks off 10 pounds in a year,? she said. ?That?s how it adds up.?Cutting back or going unsweetened, of course, is a tough challenge for almost everyone, Davis said.?Knowing what you should do and actually doing it are two very different things,? she said.

Zero to 80 calories

Even if you take the ?drink no calories? pledge to keep the weight off, some liquid calories inevitably will slip through your lips. You?re allowed, but the key is to be conscious that when you drink your calories, they count. Sixteen ounces of a soft drink or fruit juice could easily pack 200 calories. Area nutritionists and dietitians offer a few suggestions for no- and low-calorie beverages to replace sugary drinks.? Plain water. Add a fruit slice, but just a slice.? Flavored carbonated water. The mouth enjoys the zing from the carbonation.? Unsweetened tea and coffee. Watch the caffeine.? Diet drinks. Imbibe as a ?transition? from sugary drinks to unsweetened ones, or only occasionally.? Low-sodium vegetable juice. About 50 calories in 8 ounces.? Skim milk. Don?t forget your calcium. About 80 calories in 8 ounces.
