iFixit tears open an HP Z1

Those guys and gals at iFixit love nothing more than destroying something beautiful and, in the process, finding out exactly what makes it tick. The latest victim of their reckless deconstructive tendencies is HP's Z1. The all-in-one turns out to be just as beautiful on the inside as it is outside. The components aren't haphazardly tossed inside the tight enclosure or soldered in place. The impressively repairable and replaceable parts all slide out easily, with at most the turn of a few screws. Only the LCD and glass pane posed an obstacle, but even that turned out to be relatively simple to remove. For more photos of the tiny workstation torn asunder, check out the source link.

No Longer Just An App, Social Video Service ShowYou Leaps From Mobile To Web

Showyou - Sarah PerezSocial video browsing app ShowYou has often been referred to as something like a "Flipboard for video content," but now, that comparison may no longer be as apt. The company today is bringing its signature video grids, which contain all the videos you've liked or shared, to a?notable?new platform: the web. No longer confined to mobile phones and tablets, ShowYou isn't just an "app" like Flipboard anymore, it's a service. Alongside ShowYou's arrival on the web, the startup has also beefed up its search engine using social signal data to return more accurate and timely results.

Teresa Giudice to Real Housewives of New Jersey Castmates: Sorry!!!

You know what they say about apologies: they aren't sincere unless you make six figures off publishing them in a supermarket tabloid.

Teresa Giudice has taken this saying to heart and penned an open letter to her Real Housewives of New Jersey castmates. It's included in the latest issue of In Touch Weekly and, in addressing Jacqueline, Melissa, Kathy and Caroline, it reads:

"I wish I could take it all back and start over."

Teresa Giudice on In Touch Weekly Cover

On last Sunday's season four premiere - which drew record ratings for Bravo - Giudice dissed and also dismissed Gorga, her sister-in-law, saying she'd leave husband Joe in a heartbeat for a richer man.

Melissa lashed out in response, saying she was hurt by Teresa's comments and they simply aren't valid.

Meanwhile, Giudice is also engaged in a few with Jacqueline, to whom she writes:

"Dear Jacqueline, I wish we could have resolved things sooner because I’m sincerely sorry for upsetting you - and I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your apology on Twitter. I feel like things have gotten out of hand, which is sad. I miss our friendship. I miss being like Lucy and Ethel with you. And so I hope we can work through these problems one day, when you are ready. Teresa xoxo"

Should the ladies accept Teresa's apology? They just need to pick up the In Touch and decide whether or not they buy it. That's how friendship typically works, right?

Diversity aided mammals? survival over deep time

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? When it comes to adapting to climate change, diversity is the mammal's best defense. That is one of the conclusions of the first study of how mammals in North America adapted to climate change in "deep time" -- a period of 56 million years beginning with the Eocene and ending 12,000 years ago with the terminal Pleistocene extinction when mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, giant sloths and most of the other "megafauna" on the continent disappeared.

"Before we can predict how mammals will respond to climate change in the future, we need to understand how they responded to climate change in the past," said Larisa R. G. DeSantis, the assistant professor of earth and environmental studies at Vanderbilt who directed the study. "It is particularly important to establish a baseline that shows how they adapted before humans came on the scene to complicate the picture."

Establishing such a baseline is particularly important for mammals because their ability to adapt to environmental changes makes it difficult to predict how they will respond. For example, mammals have demonstrated the ability to dramatically alter their size and completely change their diet when their environment is altered. In addition, mammals have the mobility to move as the environment shifts. And their ability to internally regulate their temperature gives them more flexibility than cold-blooded organisms like reptiles.

The study, which was published on Apr. 23 in the journal Public Library of Science One, tracked the waxing and waning of the range and diversity of families of mammals that inhabited the continental United States during this extended period. In taxonomy, species are groups of individuals with common characteristics that (usually) can mate; genera are groups of species that are related or structurally similar and families are collections of genera with common attributes.

Scientists consider the fossil record of mammals in the U.S. for the study period to be reasonably complete. However, it is frequently impossible to distinguish between closely related species based on their fossil remains and it can even be difficult to tell members of different genera apart. Therefore the researchers performed the analysis at the family level. They analyzed 35 different families, such as Bovidae (bison, sheep, antelopes); Cricetidae (rats, mice, hamsters, voles); Equidae (horses, donkeys); Ursidae (bears); Mammutidae (mammoths); and Leporidae (rabbits and hares).

The study found that the relative range and distribution of mammalian families remained strikingly consistent throughout major climate changes over the past 56 million years. This period began with an extremely hot climate, with a global temperature about six degrees hotter than today (too hot for ice to survive even at the poles) and gradually cooled down to levels only slightly higher than today. It was followed by a dramatic temperature drop and a similarly abrupt warming and finished off with the Ice Ages that alternated between relatively cold glacial and warm interglacial periods.

"These data clearly show that most families were extremely resilient to climate and environmental change over deep time," DeSantis said.

Horses were consistently the most widely distributed family from the Eocene to the Pliocene (and remained highly dominant, just not number one, in the Pleistocene). In contrast, families with more restricted ranges maintained lower range areas. Thus, their work demonstrates that mammals maintained similar niches through deep time and is consistent with the idea that family members may inherit their ranges from ancestral species. The idea that niches are conserved over time is a fundamental assumption of models that predict current responses of mammals to climate change.

The analysis also found a link between a family's diversity and its range: Family's with the greater diversity were more stable and had larger ranges than less diverse families.

"Diversity is good. The more species a family has that fill different niches, the greater its ability to maintain larger ranges regardless of climate change," said DeSantis.

While most families during certain periods of time yielded either gains in species/genera (e.g., Oligocene to Miocene) or losses (Miocene to Pliocene), these changes were remarkably consistent through time with overall gains or losses in one genera typically yielding a gain or loss in of about two species.

Although the extent of family ranges remained relatively constant, the study found that these ranges moved south and east from the Eocene to the Pleistocene. That is most likely a response to the general climate cooling that took place during the period. However, southeastern movement of ranges from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene may also be complicated by the influx of South American animals when the Isthmus of Panama was formed. This triggered a tremendous exchange of species that has been labeled "The Great American Interchange." As a result, some of the southern movement of families' ranges may have been due to the influx of South American mammals, like the sloth and armadillo, moving north, the researchers cautioned.

The study also looked for evidence that families containing megafauna or other species that went extinct during the terminal Pleistocene extinction (also known as the Quaternary or Ice Age extinction) might have been in decline beforehand, but failed to find any evidence for any such "extinction prone" families. If climate change was the culprit, DeSantis and her team expect to see differences between families containing megafauna and those composed of smaller animals. However, the fact that they didn't find such evidence cannot completely rule out this possibility.

The role that diversity plays in mammalian adaptation is particularly important because mammal species have been going extinct in record numbers for the past 400 years. In a 2008 report, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature predicted that one in four species of land mammals in the world faces extinction. As a result, the diversity of mammalian families is declining at a time when they need it the most to cope with a rapidly changing climate.

Agents in prostitution scandal had president's schedule in rooms

New details about the Secret Service personnel alleged to have brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms have emerged, including reports that two of the 11 were supervisors. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

By Isolde Raftery, msnbc.com

The Secret Service agents who brought prostitutes back to their hotel rooms in Colombia last week had copies of the president?s schedule in their rooms, which raises the issue of a potential security breach, officials told Reuters.

Secret Service personnel were in Cartagena in advance of President Barack Obama?s arrival at the Summit of the Americas, a trade conference, over the weekend. At least 11 were placed on administrative leave and flown back to the United States on Saturday when it came to light that they had hired prostitutes. Their security clearances have since been pulled, NBC News has learned.

The story might have been kept a secret had it not been for a disgruntled woman who claimed she had not been paid by one of the agents. She argued with two Secret Service agents and then went to Colombian police. Local police reported the matter to the U.S. Embassy, Reuters reported.

It has also been revealed that among the Secret Service personnel involved were full-fledged agents, which further ratchets up the seriousness of the incident, officials told NBC News.

The heavily armed agents play a key role in protecting the president, and their job is to neutralize attacks, according to the agency?s website.

It was initially reported that five military service members were also involved, but that they may have only broken curfew. Now officials say that more were involved and that they did more than just return to their hotel rooms too late ?- several also paid for prostitutes.

The military service members involved were explosives experts and dog handlers from the Navy, Army and Marine Corps. The military advance team also included linguists and drivers, but they have not been implicated in the Wednesday night incident.

Members of elite unit among those suspended

At a press conference Sunday,?Obama said he would be angry if the allegations turned out to be true.

?When we travel, we have to observe the highest standards,??he said. ?We?re not just representing ourselves. We?re here on behalf of our people.?

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Secret Service, is weighing whether to launch an investigation into the prostitution allegations.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said they were embarrassed by the allegations.

?What we do know is that several of our members distracted the issue from what was a very important regional engagement for our president,? Dempsey said. ?We let the boss down because nobody is talking about what went on in Colombia other than this incident, so to that extent we let him down.?

But Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.,?defended agents in the service, calling them outstanding. He received Secret Service protection in 2008 when he was running for president.

?I am confident that the overwhelming majority of Secret Service people did not engage in this kind of behavior,? McCain said.

Cancer Supplement Focuses on Breast Cancer Care | ONS Connect

The Amer?i?can Can?cer Soci?ety has pub?lished a?sup?ple?ment to Can?cer that out?lines an inno?v?a?tive new model of breast can?cer reha?bil?i?ta?tion, addresses the numer?ous phys?i?cal issues faced by women with breast can?cer, and offers hope for an improved qual?ity of life for all women with breast can?cer through reha?bil?i?ta?tion and?exercise.

The model has been devel?oped over the past year by a?panel of inter?na?tion?ally known experts in the field, includ?ing ONS mem?bers Ann Berger, PhD, RN, AOCNS?, FAAN, and Deb?o?rah Mayer, RN, PhD, AOCN?, FAAN, with the sup?port of the Amer?i?can Can?cer Soci?ety and input from national health?care pro?fes?sional orga?ni?za?tions and advo?cacy?groups.

An excerpt from the lead paper by Stout et al. in this spe?cial sup?ple?ment states, ?The cur?rent med?ical model of care for breast can?cer is focused on dis?ease treat?ment fol?lowed by ongo?ing sur?veil?lance for local or regional recur?rence. This approach lacks atten?tion to the impact of treat?ment on patients? phys?i?cal and func?tional well-??being. Breast can?cer treat?ment can lead to phys?i?cal impair?ments and func?tional lim?i?ta?tions, includ?ing pain, fatigue, upper extrem?ity dys?func?tion, lym?phedema, weak?ness, joint arthral?gia, neu?ropa?thy, weight gain, car?dio?vas?cu?lar effects, and osteo?poro?sis. A?grow?ing evi?dence base of sci?en?tific lit?er?a?ture sup?ports prospec?tive sur?veil?lance, for early inter?ven?tion and exer?cise to pre?vent or mit?i?gate many of these?concerns.?

The sup?ple?ment fea?tures 16 arti?cles that aim to increase the num?ber of women who receive reha?bil?i?ta?tion and exer?cise to max?i?mize qual?ity of life for the one in eight women who will be diag?nosed with breast can?cer in their life?time.
