Roland's Wireless Connect lets your iPhone and electronic instruments play nice sans cords

As if there weren't already enough devices out there for connecting musical instruments to iDevices, Roland's unveiled its latest entrant to the fray over at this year's Musikmesse. Combining a duo of iOS apps and a Netgear-sourced USB dongle, the company's created what's dubbed as the Wireless Connect system. Essentially, by plugging the USB stick into a select number of the company's electronic instruments, you'll be able to jam out using your iDevice as a cord-free aid. With its updated app version of V-Drums Friend Jam, drummers can work on their chops and share the results over the web (alternatively, the current computer variant requires a wired connection). Additionally, the Air Recorder app allows you to hook up with its Synths and V-Accordions to record your playing, jam along with songs from your iPhone or both at the same time. Notably, you likely won't get much use out of Wireless Connect at your next gig, though, as it requires a LAN connection with access to the internet for full functionality. While there's not word on a pricing just yet, Roland plans to have the system on store shelves by the end of spring. Interested musicians can glance at the press release and instrument compatibility details planted just past the break.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 with Tegra 3, Android 4.0 arriving in the US and Canada for $450

The curious thing about the Acer Iconia Tab A510 is that it's been out in the open for months -- we've even handled it -- but for whatever reason, Acer's never publicly acknowledged it as the successor to last year's A500. When we got hands-on at CES, for example, it wasn't at Acer's suite, but NVIDIA's booth (this is Acer's first Tegra 3 tablet, don'tcha know). Well, the company's finally ready to come out and say, "Yes, we made this thing." The A510 is up for pre-order today in the US and Canada, with a price of $450. Though you can get it in black or white, it's available in one 32GB configuration for now. To recap, this is a quad-core slate with 1GB of RAM, a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) display, 5-megapixel auto-focusing rear camera and a single-megapixel shooter up front. And though it loses the USB 2.0 port that made the A500 fairly distinctive, it gains a battery rated for 12 hours of video playback -- a good thing, since it'll have stiff competition from ASUS, Apple and Samsung in the endurance department. Acer also confirmed the tablet will ship with Android 4.0, with the company's usual light OS tweaks in tow. Still no word on when, exactly, it'll ship, but if you want to get a feel for it in the meantime be sure to hit up our hands-on from CES if you missed it the first time around.

Grieving Copts bid farewell to Pope Shenuda

Thousands of grieving Coptic Christians packed St Mark's Cathedral in Cairo on Sunday to bid farewell to Pope Shenuda III, his body on a wooden throne, as the church considered a new head of the anxious community.

Shenuda died on Saturday aged 88 after a long illness, setting in motion the process to elect a new patriarch for the Middle East's largest Christian community.

He led the Copts, estimated at 10 percent of Egypt's population of more than 80 million, for a whole generation, during which the country was hit by a wave of Islamist militancy from which he sought to protect his flock.

Tens of thousands of mourners converged on the cathedral in a queue that stretched for more than a kilometre (nearly a mile), as military vehicles lined the road outside.

Shenuda's body, dressed in formal robes with a golden crown on his head and a gold-knobbed staff cradled on his shoulder, was placed upright on the tall ornate papal throne where it will remain sitting in state until the funeral on Tuesday.

Thousands of worshippers in black hoping for a final blessing from their spiritual leader took pictures of Shenuda on their phones, amid tears and wailing.

"It's a great loss for Egypt," Tourism Minister Munir Fakhry Abdelnur, a Copt and a close friend of Shenuda, told AFP.

"He was wise and was widely listened to. He will be missed at a time when we need wisdom and a patriotic spirit."

Copts nationwide mourned Shenuda, and one distraught woman in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia was hospitalised in critical condition after trying to commit suicide, the official MENA news agency reported.

Based on wishes stated in his will, Shenuda will be buried at St Bishoy monastery of Wadi Natrun in the Nile Delta, where he spent time in exile after a dispute with the late president Anwar Sadat, state media reported.

Shenuda's death comes amid "deep political and societal changes in Egypt," said Coptic cinema director Daoud Abdel Sayed.

The institution needs a "shake-up, like all Egyptian institutions and that will be possible if the new pope is someone who is able to bring about reforms in the church," he told AFP.

Bishop Pachomious of the Nile Delta province of Beheira has assumed papal duties for two months until a council of senior clergy meets to choose a new pope, state television said.

The successor would be chosen according to procedures laid out in 1957 church bylaws.

Coptic bishops from around the world have already started to fly in for meetings on the funeral arrangements and succession.

"Egypt Weeps," read the headline of the state-owned daily Al-Akhbar as others bid "Farewell, Pope Shenuda."

"Egypt has lost one of its greatest men," said the Al-Azhar institution in Cairo, Sunni Islam's most prestigious, in a statement. "He is a great loss, a dear friend."

Cairo-based Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi described Shenuda in a statement as "an Egyptian and national personage who took upon himself responsibilities for Egyptians and all Arabs."

Shenuda had suffered health problems for years, frequently travelling to the United States for medical care.

Condolences flooded in from around the world, with US President Barack Obama hailing Shenuda as an advocate for tolerance and religious dialogue.

Pope Benedict XVI had offered prayers for Shenuda, the Vatican said.

"I can say how much the entire Catholic Church shares the suffering of the Orthodox Copts," Benedict said in a statement released by the Vatican.

Organisation of Islamic Cooperation chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in a statement called Shenuda's death "a great loss not only to the Coptic Christian community, but for the world at large."

Muslim leaders in Egypt were quick to express their condolences.

Shenuda's death is "a grave calamity that has afflicted all Egypt and its noble people, Muslims and Christians," the country's mufti, Ali Gomaa, said in a statement.

Shenuda leaves behind a nervous community, a target of frequent sectarian attacks in recent years, with complaints of routine harassment and systematic discrimination and marginalisation.

Egypt's Christians are particularly concerned over the rise and increased assertiveness of Islamists, following the uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak.

Shenuda was placed under house arrest by the assassinated Sadat for his outspoken criticism of the late leader's courting of Islamists.

But he supported Sadat's successor, Mubarak, who was overthrown by a popular revolt more than a year ago which led to an Islamist-dominated parliament -- the first in Egypt's history.

Shenuda, instantly recognisable by his long white beard, was believed to have viewed the widely despised Mubarak as a bulwark against Islamists, who believe non-Muslims should not be allowed to rule the country.

He was seen as a check on more radical Copts who urged more forceful reactions to sectarian attacks against their community, especially after Mubarak's ouster.

BlackBerry 10 coming to the PlayBook, RIM confirms

RIM's handsets won't be getting BlackBerry 10 until later this year, but once they do, the PlayBook will be next in line. That's according to Rob Orr, RIM's VP of product management, who confirmed the news to TechRadar. "We've said publicly a number of times that our first BB10 handset will be available towards the end of 2012, and that's still firmly the case," Orr said. "At some point after the launch we'll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes." Orr apparently didn't get any more specific than that, though he did mention that RIM has seen a spike in updates to PlayBook OS 2.0, which came out just last month. According to the exec, about 50 percent of all users made the jump on the day it came out, which just goes to show how great e-mail is.

Chevron suspends Brazil oil output following new spill

US oil giant Chevron announced Thursday it was seeking temporary suspension of production operations off southeastern Brazil after a new spill was discovered.

Chevron said its Brazilian subsidiary requested the temporary shut-in of production at the Frade field as "a precautionary measure" following discovery of "a small new seep in the field."

The Frade field, located 370 kilometers (230 miles) off Rio de Janeiro state, currently produces roughly 60,000 barrels per day.

Chevron said it would conduct a comprehensive technical study and prepare a complementary study to better understand the geological features of the area, working with its partners and seeking necessary approvals from Brazil's National Petroleum Agency (ANP).

The US firm, which has a 51.74 percent operating interest in the Frade Field, said the suspension was endorsed by its Brazilian and Japanese partners in the project.

In November, Chevron was blamed for a major spill in the same area, with ANP calculating that some 3,000 barrels of crude were spilled.

Brazilian authorities as a result suspended all of Chevron's drilling operations and denied it access to huge new offshore fields, which ANP says have reserves that could surpass 100 billion barrels of high-quality recoverable oil.

Prosecutors also announced legal action against Chevron, its Brazilian unit and oil drilling contractor Transocean, seeking $11 billion over the November spill.
